Hi Lewis...Welcome to the site...Cracking bikes the FZ1...Gearing change is one of the first things I did to give a bit more low down as they are geared fairly tall I found. get yourself a Scala too...Oh I already said that :-)

24300 miles now...I have just changed her shims so she should be good for another 24300 :-)

When you changed your shims how did you tension the cam chain? When cranked clockwise the chain seems tensioned but when cranked anti-clockwise the chain went slack. Is this normal? Is it true the cam chain tensioner only works properly when it has oil pressure on it?

Has anyone actually changed the Shims on an FZ1 or experienced valve burnout? Maybe I should have ignored the valve clearance being out of tolerance?

Thanks for the reply.. Does anyone know what is the correct way to re-install the camchain tensioner and get it to tension the chain without the engine running on a FZ1? I think it uses oil pressure to tension, but want it fully tensioned before starting the engine! Cheers

Cheers for the reply...So we are going ahead with the shim replacement as might as well whilst the cover is off and the bike is in pieces. Worked out the relevant clearance calculations and decided what shim sizes we needed to get so popped to the dealer. Strange...even though the bike was...

The speedo was 10% out from GPS speed and then I changed the front/rear sprockets and chain with a -1/+1 format which put the speedo out even further so thought I would install the Speedo Healer. It was easy enough to do and so now at least my speedo matches my GPS speed. Another job...
