    Back to the Maxim 550

Well guys, it looks like I am headed back to the XJbikes forum. I just haven't been riding as much anymore so I decided to sell the FZ1. I would like to sell the XJ550 also, but it has a much deeper place in my heart as my very first bike, so it is harder to do. I want to thank you guys for...

    Gas leak

Don't let that illusion fool you. Many times, the leak is higher up or coming from just one place and it seeps to the areas of least resistance, making it appear that the leak is coming from somewhere that it isn't. Did you recently get the bike, or have you had it for a while?

    Gas leak

I have an idea. Pull the seat, tank, and covers off and grab a flashlight.

    Front axle special tool

I looked around a little more and I see what you are talking about now. I thought you meant the spark plug tool that came in the under seat kit. I am wondering if Yamaha intended for the spark plug tool to be used for the front axle, but that some were made improperly. Mine just barely...

    Front axle special tool

I tried that. Mine doesn't fit.

    Front axle special tool

I doubt you guys have the same tools in your garage that I do, but I thought you guys would get a kick out of this nonetheless. My rear tire failed state inspection so I decided to get new rubbers all the way around, because I wanted to replace the rear with a Pilot Road 2 and I don't like to...

    Brake light

Can you see and hear the switch actually being actuated? The switch operates by the lever relieving contact, instead of making it. If there is gunk built up in that area, it could be keeping the nipple in the in position, instead of allowing it to pop out so that it actuates the internals of...

    Wifey's Riding!

Not to be the party pooper. But you bought a new bike because of a flat tire?

    Another stupid question

It is not illegal to acquire a scanned copy of the manual. It is only illegal if you are selling the file without permission of the owner, or claiming the information as your own when it is in fact copyrighted material. To say it is illegal is like saying it is illegal to lend the book you...

    Another stupid question

Ummm. If you get the manual on CD, you can just print whatever pages you want to keep for frequent reference. // Edited // We do not condone buying / downloading illegal copies of the service manual. THERE IS NO LEGAL PDF OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

    I'm new here.

I wouldn't worry about replacing the boots unless the bike isn't running correctly. As long as the cracks aren't going all the way through the boots, they aren't affecting anything except looks, and nobody runs around looking at other people's carb boots, I don't believe. There is also...

    Lowering questions?

I think you are still not understanding. Since the forks are not straight up and down on any bike, you can't just adjust the bike equally on the front and back and still wind up with the same geometry. You are affecting more than just the center of gravity. The level coming back to the same...

    Lowering questions?

This is exactly what I do and I have never had a problem. Not even with a fat chick on the back. I am 5'5"ish with a 27 inch inseam at best, maybe 5'7"ish with boots on. If people lack that much confidence in controlling their bike, perhaps they should take some riding and safety courses...

    Lowering questions?

I don't know the answer about parts hitting. But I think you are misdirected in thinking that lowering the front and rear the same amount can't lead to a change in handling. Anytime you are messing with the heights, you are changing the geometry of the bike, or at the very least, the center of...

    Octane

I call bullshysties on it all. I have seen a tanker leaving a Shell station and then stopping across the street to fill up the no name station. And in todays lawsuit happy society, do you really think gas stations are going to leave themselves open to ruining engines because they allowed...

    Exhaust pop

No. Exhaust popping is not normal or okay. Exhaust popping indicates a lean condition that you caused by installing the non-OEM exhaust and failing to tune the fuel system to account for it. While you may be able to eliminate the popping by disabling the AIS system, I would still...

    AIS block off...newbie how to

Well, I digress. I am still thinking of tuning via carburetor adjustments and such. I can do that myself and I have all the tools to do so. I didn't even think about the fuel injected bikes needing computer help.

    AIS block off...newbie how to

Well, not really. Blocking the system may decrease or eliminate the popping, but that doesn't mean it is in a proper state of tune. It may be bring it back close enough to stock settings to eliminate the popping, but stock settings are still a bit lean, and you can make your engine run better...

    AIS block off...newbie how to

Oh I see. I guess I am just used to properly tuning my bikes after messing with the exhaust.

    Octane

There is only one reason to run higher octane gas in any vehicle you own, than what the manual recommends, unless you experience pinging in the engine. Other than that, there is zero benefit.
