Michelin Pilot Road 3

I don't see a package deal on BikeBandit.com, but the total for two Michelin Pilot Road 3 tires is $305.44 + $8.95 ground shipping. I think that they do a 10% discount to AMA members, too.

I replaced both tires on my '08 with Pilot Road 3's just before leaving on a 3000-mile trip. The rear had a few hundred miles on it before starting the trip, but was effectively new. The front still had some of the "nipples" on it when I left my house.

I spent two full days riding highway, two in the rain, and the remainder on twisties and sweepers. Overall, I couldn't be happier. At no point did I feel like I was losing traction under any conditions. The tires fared extremely well in the rain, shedding water as they're designed, and felt well-planted as I cruised through sweepers in a torrential downpour. About 1000 miles was spent driving in a straight line on the highway (across most of the Ohio and Pennsylvania turnpikes) and the tires show no signs of squaring off. Seems like the dual-compounds are doing their jobs.

Through the twisties and sweepers I never felt unstable, and was able to get the chicken-strips down to about 1/4 inch going through a number of tight turns.

I'd recommend these tires. Way better than the Dunlops that I used on my old bike.

I put my on before a 1000 mile trip and day 1 was spent in drizzle to a torential downpour! No issues and I was glad I had 'em on, BUT....last week, during my normal 'emergency braking practice', the bike a very slight headshake, which has never happened with all the other tires (PR2, Q2, PP 2CT, 023). The first time it surprised me, so I did it again, over the same piece of road, and it did the same thing. Hmmmm.....anyone else experience this?

Emergency braking means I'm lifting the rear off the ground slightly! Ys, stoppies with the bike are realitively easy.

I have the PR2's and they are a fantastic tyre. From what iv'e read the 3's are cutfor better wet handling.. i try to avoid the rainy days as over here, as soon as it rain, people seem to foget how to drive!!!!!

Pilot Road 3 tires Update

I have just over 6000 miles on my new PR3's now and they are wearing very well. I don't kneedrag in the corners and ride mostly highway...so sure they are developing some flat area in the center but otherwise they still have plenty of tread and I expect to get another 5-6,000 out of them. Great tires !!

I've had my PR3s on for a week or so and put some mileage on them. They're fantastic, I can tell straight away. Warm-up time is impressively short. I only commute about 3 km to work and my front tire will warm to the touch when I get home! My ContiMotions were never like that.

The tires make the bike feel lighter and more agile. There is a lot of front end feel now compared to the previous tires. They are also excellent in the rain, of course

Happy. Well worth the money

I would totally agree. I've had mine on my '07 FZ1 for a full season with about 6000 miles on them. The front looks barely worn and the rear is showing moderate wear, but not like I expected. (I'm usually not too easy on the acceleration) Since all the roads where I am are flat and straight, I knew I needed a hard compound in the center, but the softer sides still grip as much as I need. I have felt the rear 'step out' just a bit when exiting a hard corner, but it never felt unstable or scared me.

I've unintentionally tested them in the rain on 3 occasions. They were fantastic in the wet and far exceeded my expectations. If I make a trip to the Dragon next year like I want, I haven't decided if I should stay with the PR3's or go with a softer tire. I have a 471 mile trip to get there.

z8? or p3?

Michelin PR3's

I now have just over 10,000 miles on my Michelin PR3's. They have been very good tires but on the expensive side. I should get another 1000 miles or so before I have to get new tires....not sure if I will go with PR3's again or go to a less costly but equally well wearing tire. If anyone has info on this I'd appreciate some feedback. I was considering Shinko Verge's, Pirelli's, or maybe PR2's.

Have you looked into the Metzler Roadtech Z6s? Used them on my FZ6 and I loved them. I even did a trackday with them. They were awesome as far as mileage went and they had excellent grip in the twisties.

I would stay away from the Shinkos and the PR2s. Why spend money on inferior performing tires than what you just had. The Dunlop Roadsmart 2 will give you similar performance (actually a little better in the dry) for less money than the PR3s.

Ok, I'm at 5000 miles on the PR3s at the moment. The rear is showing a bit of wear in the centre but I would think there's at least another 5000 in the centre. The rear is scalloping a little bit on the sides and there seems to be greater wear on the left side than on the right. I think this is normal for anyone who drives on the right side of the road

Some high res photos, hope it's helpful in some way:

I'll update again in another 5000 miles

Thanks for the pics. I have about 6,000 miles on my PR3's and am seeing about the same wear. I'll try to take some pictures of mine and post up too. Great idea.

Just put a PR3 rear tire only two days on it, that tire is stickyyy out of the box with no scrubbing, compared to Metzler Z6 and M3 it is far superior in cornering.

I bought my FZ1 with the stock Dunlops or whatever and they were shit.

My bike had 1,000m on it when I bought it, by 5,000m the back tyre was down to metal.

I replaced both with PR2s have done over 3,000m on them and they both look like new.

If you get 10,000m out of a tyre you cant complain imo. They are literally the only things standing between you and potential disaster, so buy the most expensive ones you can afford.

I will be getting PR3s for my next set.

I got 11k out of my last set of Bridgestone 023's.
