Question on clutches...

I bought a used 2007 FZ1. For the first two weeks the bike ran like a dream, but last Sunday when I fired it up to go for a ride, I ran into a problem I've never had with any of the three bikes I've owned. The bike started and warmed up as usual, but as soon as I shifted into 1st gear the engine stalled out. It didn't matter if I shifted into 1st of 2nd, the result was the same. I thought there might be an issue with the clutch tension but the only adjustment mechanism I saw was the adjustment screw where the cable met the lever. I tried loosening and tightening the screw but the results were the same at either extreme. My other thought was that it may be an issue with the idle, but the engine seemed to be idling at about the same rpm level it always did. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what did you do? I can't even ride the bike over to the shop! Help!

This is my first FZ. What kick stand switch? My last bike was an 84 Honda NighthawkS so I'm a little behind on current technology... Will the engine automatically kill if the kick stand is down when shifted into gear? Is there a switch under the bike I should check?

When you look at the kick stand it will be evident. Hope this gets you on your way and that its not a bigger problem. If it revs and runs fine while in neutral and doesn't lurch really hard when you put it in gear the issue will be the switch. Let me know how it works out.

Thanks for the advise! Good as new and ready to roll. It's amazing how technology will sneak up on you! This is the first bike I've had that didn't have a center stand so I didn't even think to check that. It should be a nice sunny weekend. I'll post a picture of my bike. Thanks again.

You should have a centerstand, unless the previous owner removed it. I have removed mine and could part with it cheaply. Glad to be of help and the cost of the repair was free.

Kickstand switch on my 2002 GSXR was going bad so that it would cut out while riding down the highway, so I just cut the wires and wire-nutted them together...

Glad you found the problem!
