Progression of Lunacy....a pictorial documentary and random discussion

need a lift?

Looks great! I used to use 2" ratchet straps to lift my old FZ 600 (it had no center stand). I just hooked one end to the rafters (garage was not finished back then) and the other end to the passenger peg brackets, then just used the ratchets to do the lifting. The straps are rated for 3000 lbs so they never had any trouble with a 450 lb. bike.

I could support it if I had to, but I'm having such good results being forced to take my time that I do not want to jinx myself.

Forks arrive today from Traxxion.
Ceramic Coating should be completed today.
Still on the hunt for a local welder to modify center/side stand. It is almost cheaper for me to send to cycle one off in Rochester, NY, and HE is familiar with what it takes to be sure it is sound.

Then once I get the frame painted, it'll be tackling the carbs to put the final nail in the coffin.

Got the first round of color on. Going to let the 'phog' clear out and go back and touchup.

Got forks today.
Got OEM inner fairing inserts from a member on the "rehto" forum.
Just got a call from the ceramic coater and header is ready.

now I just have to unmask and can hopefully start assembling tomorrow or no later than Friday.

by touchup, I mean use another can with focus on the front to try and offer a few layers before primer is reached for chip control.

I'll have about five coats on when I'm finished -- a few more on the front down tubes.

Looking great man! Before I sold the Gen1, I was going to paint the frame black. Looks SO much better!

Well, I got a call from the shop doing the ceramic coating. It won't be until next week b/c of issues with the finish flaking.

:(

I've done the approx 3 recoats, using 2 1/2 cans of paint. I'm going to do 1 more cans worth and then call it done. I think it will be sufficient, and I don't want to wreck everything that I've done to date, I only have one little run, but you won't be able to see when everything is installed, but I'll know it is there.....so my run for a 'perfect frame' is tarnished -- but the money saved is a good offset!

Not summat i'd do - would gone rite to powder coaters job done - i garentee you will mark the paint in reassemble been there done that and cussed

just my view - and with the range of colors mets and pearls avaliable tiz a no brainer

At the least i'd clear coat on top to protect the paint

But then wadda i know lol

don't have the funds available for all the list of goodies. I had saved up about 550.00 to take care of the this years rehab.

between traxxion for the service and the ceramic coaters for the headers, I've already blown my budget.....so far I'm about 100.00 for materials and misc. I'll have the pennies counted at the end....

As for the scratches, I'll cross that bridge WHEN I get to it.

Well, did not take long to see the effect of the scratches. So, I'll finish doing all the necessary work and then touch up the various areas and then shoot a couple layers of clear on top of it.

Thought the paint would have a little bit better durability.

Another setback, but one that is not insurmountable....

powder is not that expensive here bout $200 per frame and as the bike is already striped it's a no brainer get it done and no you wont need to touch up etc

:)

well, that will probably have to be a project for 'next' winter. I'll spend my time completing the tasks at hand, including finishing up clear coating the plastics.

But I'll probably go and have the rear swingarm powdercoated so I don't have to worry about it....

yeah, after tinkiering around with some of the clear coats today, methinks that I'll have to gut it up and break down the frame proper for powder coating.

As much as it pains me to say it, no sense in making a good effort only to re-do it in the winter.....on the fence and will make the final call this evening.

For those that have done a complete breakdown, is it less painful than it looks?

Also, since the right downtube has to be taken off to remove the engine, what kind of setup is needed to cradle the engine, or a cheapy holder to get the job done?

kinda like me and framing, I really won't be happy unless I know that it is done right. (I just wished I would of moved on this sooner when the weather was still crappy!)

heck, maybe it is time to look for a stable mate......

no it does not look bad, but I know through the course of normal riding, scratches will become noticeable.

I played with some clearcoats today, and did not like the initial outcome. I really don't want to break out the big guns (HVLP) because I was trying to see if I could really save money over having a shop do it.

I know the gloss has some enamels in it that would offer a little better protection, but I like the look of the satin black....still have some more experimenting to do.

but in the meantime....
