Official YZF Makeover Thread

That sux about the hearders Billy, People dont take pride in other peoples things. For best results sad to say but do your own work. You will appreciate how much you care to begin with.

This is an awesome build your doing. I have nothing but the highest of respect for you and your love of the machine. THis is more than just a clean up and by a little off season time, your making it your own. Class act you are.

Still looking forword to the ride..

Did you see the events comming next weekend to NJMSP? A lot of free stuff.
We are thinking of taking Ryan down there for he Monster truck rides.
They are having Free karting, Drive or ride on the track. all kinds of goodies it looks like.

Sorry about the headers, but I think you've got it taken care of with the paint and reduced payment. I can't believe how beautiful that hugger is, it should keep your rear end clean enough to eat off with just a quick wipe...

I'd adjust your back for you if I was there. Take a ride over to IL, and I'll fix you up. What care you are taking with this build. I'm so anxious for the start up and ride.

Thanks Troy. It's not too bad this morning. A little stiff but I'll stretch before heading down in 15 minutes or so. Nothing will keep me from getting some things done today. Pics to come later. Time to stretch!

I feel your pain brother !! (back pain that is)

I spent too much time bent over the RZ yesterday and my BACK is all kinked up. . . . ouch, ohh----that hurts. . . .:icon_beer:

Time to stretch, get the heatpad out, and plan the day !

Come on Billy, let's get to work . . .. :woot:

Must be the weather Im kinked as well. Hot shower and some movement gets me going. Not pain free but going.

I feel for you guys who also suffer from back pain. This sux.

Unfortunately, it wasn't the weather. The driver at work took the week off and you know what that means! So of course there is a huge delivery for 51st in Manhattan for Friday. I went the whole week just fine. I lifted a bag of gravel mix from the truck and that was it. I felt it snap. I stopped immediately and the customer finished unloading but the damage was done. It's gonna be a week or more before it feels better. I have been through this before. I'm taking it easy all next week. I hope your feeling better brother!

Ouch, take care Billy. I hope you heal up quickly.

I took my 11 year old and his best friend to play paint ball today. I was rolling up the flank just like back in Iraq and I felt my back. Of course I had to finished off three enemies and now my back is throbbing. I guess I'm finally getting old at 47...Two glasses of Bushmills Honey Whiskey, I feel better now. Okay, four Advil too....

It sucks getting old Pete! I may go for some Advil myself, at least to go to bed. Feel better buddy!

OKAY!!! Back or no back, I was down at 7am this morning and stayed until 6pm. Mostly because I was too tired to come up earlier so I just sat and gazed at the YZF for an hour or so. Things accomplished today:

Rear Stainless Brake Line Installed

New Brake Fluid and Bled System

Sprayed The Exhaust Headers To Fix The Screw-up

Installed The Rear Hugger

Greased And Installed The EXUP Valve

Installed The Exhaust Headers

Installed The Yoshi RS-3

Installed The Radiator And Filled With Coolant

Installed The Battery And Power Plug For Charging

Installed The Right Rear Body Panel

Installed Pillion

Rebuilt Petcock And Installed In Tank

As soon as I entered the garage, I set the Headers in front of the electric heater and let it cook for an hour or more.
IMG_2939.jpg

While that was cooking I installed the rear stainless brake line after evacuating the fluid.
IMG_2940.jpg

IMG_2941.jpg

After bleeding both nipples the rear brake was as hard as the front, and the fluid was shiny clean!
IMG_2942.jpg

Once that was done I turned my attention to the headers. They were super hot and I sprayed them from a long distance to fade the two colors together.
IMG_2943.jpg

While they were drying under the lamp I installed the rear hugger. It's a great piece and fit perfectly.
IMG_2945.jpg

IMG_2947.jpg

IMG_2950.jpg

IMG_2951.jpg

I checked the Headers and they were "well done" so it was time to get the valve in place.
IMG_2954.jpg

I cleaned the mating surfaces so it would sit flush against each other.
IMG_2955.jpg

After a few minutes of greasing the bushings it was a done deal.
IMG_2957.jpg

There was no way I was lifting them under the bike so I used the bike jack with a towel on top to lift the headers into place. Richie came down to help with the exhaust gaskets. I used a small dab of High Temp RTV to hold them in place while Richie inserted each tube into place. I know about the rusty studs so no need to mention it. I'm going to brush on a rust inhibitor next week. I forgot the bottle at work.

IMG_2960.jpg

IMG_2961.jpg

Next up was the Yoshi RS-3. It is a beautiful piece and looks great against the flat black mid-pipe.
IMG_2963.jpg

IMG_2965.jpg

IMG_2967.jpg

Next in went the radiator with the painted fans. It went in so easy. It's great working with parts that aren't dirty.
IMG_2968.jpg

IMG_2969.jpg

This was the rusty fan from the original pictures. Looks good as new now!
IMG_2970.jpg

Since I was done with the rear brake, exhaust, and hugger, I decided to install the right rear body panel and pillion. Not for any other reason except for making the bike look almost complete.
IMG_2975.jpg

IMG_2977.jpg

IMG_2978.jpg

I hooked up the battery in it's compartment and hooked up the power cord for the charger.
IMG_2980.jpg

I ran the power cord between the body panel and cable tied it to the lock assembly. It tucks in out of sight when riding and just pulls out at the end of the day to plug into the charger.
IMG_2981.jpg

IMG_2982.jpg

While I was in the rear, I filled the coolant reservoir with distilled water and antifreeze. I need to remove some tomorrow as I went a little past the full line.
IMG_2983.jpg

I was pretty much done doing things on the bike so I turned my attention to the leaky fuel petcock. It spews gas whether "on" or "off".
IMG_2984.jpg

I bought the rebuild kit so it was just a matter of removing, dis-assembling, and putting it back together.
IMG_2985.jpg

Upon inspection I found the problem. A torn seal under the switch.
IMG_2987.jpg

I cleaned all the parts and installed the new O-ring and gaskets.
IMG_2988.jpg

IMG_2989.jpg

Installed again and Leak Free!
IMG_2991.jpg

One funny thing I saw as I cleaned the bottom of the tank was this date written on it. I believe it reads 1-17-98. I wonder if that was when it was built or when it was installed on the bike????
IMG_2993.jpg

So that was it for today. Tomorrow is another day. I made headway today but came upstairs and found the spark plugs looking at me in the face! OOPS!!! That sucks. I may have to lower the radiator again. Darn!!! So here she sits waiting for the finishing touches.
IMG_2994.jpg

Hopefully my back will allow me to get some more stuff done tomorrow. I need to look in my manual because when I turned the power on to check if my rear turn signals were wired correctly, I noticed the tach swing to "8". I'll have to see what that code is for. Thanks for looking and see you tomorrow!!!

Sorry you're hurting Billy but WOW! Great progress for a handicapped guy.

I hope the meds work and tomorrow is as productive. Get some earned sleep!

Thanks my friend. I just applied some of Dave's Mystery Oil he sent me. It worked for the Sciatica so hopefully it will work for this. Gonna lay down now cause it's really hurting now. I'll see you guys tomorrow! Have a great evening.

Looks mighty fine there Billy, you earned your break this evening. Rest well, and take care of that back.
That YZF is gonna be a real looker .. . . .:wow:

Unbelievable how this is coming together. Great job. Now quit ignoring your back pain and covering it up with pain killer. That's like unplugging your oil light and hoping it all works out because the light is out. Get to a chiropractor!

(You don't have back pain because of a lack of endogenous Advil. I don't have a problem with Advil, as long as you're actually fixing the real problem)

Hey Billy Sorry your back "went out" on ya. I thought your were just getting stiffness.

I hate it when it goes out like that. Dang I feel for ya. And yes its about a week or so before its ironed out. But your doing the best thing for back pain, Get up and get moving. It shortens the recovery time.

I hope you get some relief from the snake oil,
I have tried everything and I mean everything and IMO so far for the money it is the best. It has the least amount of topical feeling with the deepest amount of pain relieving penatration.

My best to you and your back.

The Bike looks awesome.

Your absolutely right Troy. My back has been going out on me since elementary school at age 10. I've been to countless doctors, specialists, chiropractors, since that time. I have bulges, herniations, fluid loss, you name it. I'll see if I can find my MRI results from 10 years ago. Yet in all that time, not one doctor suggested operating. I have at least 3 friends that have lesser issues than me and have had the fusion done and are much better for it now. I had been fine up until me being stupid and lifting those bags. I should have known better than to do that. I had been problem free for over two years prior to this event. In my 40 years of dealing with this, you learn how to sit, how to get up, warning signs, etc. but if you do something dumb as I did, this is what happens. I know that advil and pain killers don't fix the issue. I'll be better in a few days and be smarter in the future. No more lifting for me.
