2012 Tuono V4 APRC Ride Review and Porn

^^^ Really the only mods a person may need are sliders, and a taller wind screen. Other than that there is nothing to do.

I had Ed put on axle sliders front and back, and frame sliders. I may add a clutch cover as that case cover sticks out and the other sliders will not keep it off the ground. Unlike the RSV4s, the Tuono cover is aluminium vs. magnesium, and is much more durable so I may not need it. It was $135 so I held off.

Which is a good thing and a bad thing. Good in that it is that complete, bad in that I LOVE to tinker. Maybe I should get an old lawn mower to fix???

So I looked at the local dealer.... Tuono V4 R APRC $14,999.00 MSRP. Then I made myself very sick... I opened up Excel and put the price of my bike ($9,412.00 OTD) on line 1 then put in the prices of all the mods including the ones I've ordered and not installed. I am at $14,183.00 right now and I've not yet considered upgrading the brakes outside of the HEL lines waiting to be installed NOR have I gotten to the AK 20 Traxxion cartidges for the forks... another $2k easily left to make this a bit "closer" to the Tuono.... So Pete? Yeah, GOOD $!%$# CHOICE!!! Well played and still a better ride by a long shot. :doh2:

This is the key... When you take a bone stock brand new FZ1 and start adding all these possible bits to it, the price isn't really THAT far off and you couldn't get the FZ1 close enough to compare to this bike because it simply cannot reach that far ahead for power, torque and features. This Tuono really does have it all and I just scratch my head wondering what you could possibly want to do to it. Anyone? What mod *could* you do?

Aprilia has come a long way. I almost bought the Shiver back when I sold my 2005 FZ6 but I was shied away because the Shiver was too new and had bugs plus at that time, Aprilia's rep was just OK... resale values never held up. But over the last 5 years, they've stepped up a great deal and when you stop and think about this particular bike? Who gives two sh*ts about resale value? Why would you want anything else?

Exactly! I have an excel sheet that I keep track of bikes and parts I buy and sell.

I am currently ard 11K in mine excluding the $$ from sales of various parts. Bought the bike for 6.5k OTD. Doesn't make damn freaking sense....

That's why I didn't go too crazy on the FZ1. I've sold most of my mods, I'll recoup about 60 to 65% of them. The R1 parts are staying on the bike, but I sold the calipers, and forks which offset the cost a little for that mod. All of that money will go towards paying off the T. Aprilia has loans for 3.0% right now, so after I sell all the mods, and the FZ1, I'll have 2/3'rds of the T paid off. I put 20% down.

I paid $4,000 OTD for the FZ1, service and repairs was about $1,250. That flywheel was expensive. And I bought some odd ball OEM parts, hugger, the old one was cracked, a used OEM wind screen, etc. So all in all it's not too bad for two years of ownership.

I may pull the brakelines off and put the OEM ones back on, if I get motivated.

Now the R6, don't even ask...that bike is a money pit. When I do sell it, some day, I may just part it out. It may be the nicest '05 on the planet, but it is still not worth much. Maybe $4,500?

Maybe one day but I will own my FZ1 until I have to put her down. I'll just avoid test riding the Aprilla to keep the FZ1 luster intact.

PETE YOU CANT BRAINWASH ME......

I am just really, REALLY disppointed that there are no lasers. Come on! What was Apprilla thinking? No lasers? I will hold out for the 2013. ;)

Damn, I didn't realize you had the FZ1 for 2 years... I thought you owned it maybe for less than a year or so given how frequently I am seeing new bike updates from ya :D

OH, the SOUND! How could I forget, :doh2: this the BEST sound stock motorcycle exhaust I've ever heard! It is full, somewhat loud, and bangs during a blip down shift. With the Arrow exhaust with no db killer it can be as loud as a Harley, only it goes FAST! I'll try to get some sound tape tomorrow. I've go an old school MiniDV camcorder that has 24 bit sound. Sounds great.

Well I hope I somehow mange a test ride on one of these one day...until then I'll have to live vicariously though you ;)

As for the sound I can only imagine. Pretty much how I felt after riding the Triumph Daytona 675 and really winding it out then letting it pop on decel...pure music to the ears :D

Congrats Pete. I look forward to more about the bike once the "Honeymoon" period is over.

Nothing better than finding a machine that never fails to put a smile on your face. I am lucky enough to have had many of those, and still have 2.

I bought my FZ after a 25 yr 'absence' from m/c---life, job, marriage just didn't compute w/my '84 Ninja. I retired 'early', turn down a promotion, at the insistence of my wife .... and 10 months later she filed for divorce. Life's interesting, BUT .... I got back into m/c, buying thte FZ because I wasn't sure I really wanted to 'get back in'. It was sexy, great performance, and I paid $8000 OTD for a brand new one. I've mod'ed the bike, but only those that allow me more comfort on long rides (3000 mile type rides---Russell seat/Ohlin/hgher bars/etc). Now, after 24,000 miles and I'm 'back in' (bought a track bike last month) I'm really looking for something 'sexier'!!! And the Aprila .....

$15,000 for that bike is a great price! It's amazing to me that so many do NOT part the bike out and see how much all the 'bling' would cost. A buddy of mine is lusting for a truimph 675, but doesn't want to spend the extra money for the R model, even though its 'cheap' considering whats on the bike. The Aprila is pure sexy performance! CONGRATS!!!! Now you have me 'lusting' for it!

I'm curious about insurance rates on the Tuono V4 APRC? I like the rest of you am lusting over the Tuono V4 but, at 167 ponies from the factory, I have a feeling the insurance companies will not be as kind as we would like. Also will this bike be classified as a sport touring or pure sport bike or ? I realize the Tuono trumps the FZ in pretty much every catagory, but cost of ownership is a big factor.

I still think the new Tuono is a freekin sweet bike, congrats on the new ride!

Good question. So new they arr not in the databases yet. My ins company is putting into the system, I should know today. One Guy is paying $350 a year with Progressive. I'm guessing $500.

It is a standard, and European bikes are crashed less that Japanese biked, R6, so it shouldn't br too bad.

A standard hey?? lol

There's nothing standard about that bike.

Enjoy it Pete and please post a few more ride reports especially once you have ridden it in anger through some corners.
