I need to buy chain lube but terrified to walk into the Yamaha dealer as my self control is not so good, better bring wife with me that way the Gen 1 will be coming home to it's cozy garage

Mine does same sort of thing when plugs are shot, try changing them out and clean air filter
Also when battery is on the way out it will intermittently not turn over clock / trip meters will all reset to 0.
Now keep bike on tender whenever at home and this battery is going on 6 years old now...
You do not want chain tight, under suspension compression it will put stress on your transmission. Also remember when adjusting chain to do a retotation of chain to find the tightest point and adjust slack from there. When mine is adjusted correctly yes it touches the plastic gaurd when pushed...
Lol so true. I will add find a rural road not much traffic and as smitty said rip it through the gears shifting at red line, if your balls are big enough to do it on the rural road keep her pinned in 6th gear too

When mine went it did not have the tach warning, started off as being intermittent then about a week later stopped working completely.

I had to change mine the speed sensor is at bottom of engine in back just above swingarm if memorary serves me correct, pretty easy job just dirty if you have alot of chain lube gunk in there

After many miles you know by your rpms what gear you are in at highway speeds. Actually when my speed sensor quit couple years back rode with no Speedo for a bit while new one was on order and it is amazing how you really do know you speed by rpms, not one ticket :-)

Buddy of mine is thinking about purchasing a used 1200 Monster not the S model and he asked if I knew anything about them which I do not. Anyone ridden one or know someone who owns one?
