Official YZF Makeover Thread

Well Billy you'll have to take those inner panels off again to get the stock lights on there when you get them.

By the way I just noticed that the PO used the metal retaining plates from the stock lights to bolt on the existing lights! You have the locking plates already. You'll just have to get a small bolt to hold them on...

Yeah, I'm not installing any bodywork until the bike comes back from Ivan's. I'm keeping them upstairs so when the lights come I'll just replace them. Once the rear plate mount is done I'm going to install two angled plates riveted to either side of the plate holder to mount the rear turn signals to. Then I'll fill the two small holes in the rear body panels and use the touch up paint to make them black. They should blend right into the black portion of the decals. Luckily the P.O. only made one 8/32" hole on each side, so it's very small and shouldn't be too noticeable.
 
I brought the touch up paint marker from work today which my buddy Sal was nice enough to lend me. I applied the paint in light coats and only on the deep scratches. It will have to do until next season where I may just have them painted.

I used some Nissan Black to make the repairs.

It's not perfect but it's way better than looking at those deep white scratches. After about 24 hours I will wet sand them lightly with 2 or 3000 wet paper to knock down the high spots, and then I'll polish them again.
 
It actually really doesn't look that bad Billy. That will be one of those fixes that only you will know about. Unless you get someone that is looking at it from about 2 inches away. Very nice job on that beast so far bro!!
 
Hey Billy heres a picture of my friend Keene on the Dragon. He just sold it 2 weeks ago and bought a 2012 R1. He had 65,000 miles on her.

Thanks Johnny! That looks awesome! I hope I have a chance to get my pic taken on the Dragon on the YZF too. There or maybe at NJMP during a track day. :D Thanks for posting that shot, it's great.

They came out pretty nice Billy! I'm sure once the fairings are mounted on the bike those scratches will hardly be noticeable.

I even wish I still had my old YZF1000R... Oh those were the days!

Oh then we could have had our own little YZF1000/Thunderace club...lol

I actually know another member on here (he's in Portugal) that has a Thunderace as well. It's blue/black and looks fantastic.

Well, I bought her new in 2000 and in just under a year I was thrown off her on the highway....
because i had a backpack held down on the back seat that had a bunjee cord strap holding it on, but the bag had 2 loops to thread the cord thru so I couldn't loose the bag...
Only thing was this one windy day I'm cruising along at 90km/h and a strong cross wind blew the bag off the seat and the whole setup did what I wanted and held on to the bag, only thing was now this bag flapping in the wind had freely slid onto the muffler and rested against the rear tyre which grabbed the whole thing and pulled it in and locked up the rear wheel when I backed off...
so i went for a skid and the bike skidded out from underneath me leaving me sliding down the highway...
I was never the same after that event, I was so paranoid about coming off now that I couldn't ride it without thinking I was going to die every second... so I traded it in on a new car in 2001...
Wish I never did that but I needed the break to get my head right....

So when I bought the FZ1 I was taking a bit of a gamble not knowing if I would be scared of falling off again... as I didn't get a chance to ride anything before I bought it... but thankfully it worked out.
I think reading Keith Code's books helped enormously!

That sucks Scott. My saving grace when I was hit a couple of years back was that I was out cold for an hour and woke up in the hospital. I have no recollection of the accident so it instilled no fear of getting back on the bike. I think had I'd been concious through the ordeal, I may have thought differently about getting back on. So while I was unlucky in having the accident, I was lucky that I can'r remember it. I'm glad your back though!
