Official YZF Makeover Thread

No, not this weekend coming. Probably the next as long as I get the trailer built and registered. If I can get Tony here this coming weekend to just spend an hour or so routing the EXUP Cables, then I will build the trailer on Sunday and register it during the week. If all goes to plan then I'll bring it over Saturday morning, the 17th of this month. This is all provided that my back is in good enough shape to build the trailer of course, but thats the schedule I'd like to see.

I'm working on making that happen. Looks like I will have a few hours on Sunday to stop by and get that all straighten out...

I brought up the inside dash cover and one of the "mid" panels to get cleaned up. Thank God they weren't as dirty as all the rest which made things much more pleasant. Here are the "Before" shots:

This is the inner piece from the "mid" panel:

One nice thing that I found out today, is that the front turn signals ARE NOT drilled through which is great because now I can just buy a set of originals and pop them back in!

This is the outside of the panel. I have to say that those scratches are really going to bother me once the bike is back together. I'm not in the position for paint, and I don't want to put any decals on the bodywork so I guess I'll have to live with it.....for a while at least.

The inner dash panel had a ton of grime on one side only, not sure why?

And now for the "After" shots..............

I may or may not try and use a touch-up paint marker on the black to "mask" some of the bigger scratches. If I go very lightly I could probably lessen the horrible sight you see. I'll pick one up this weekend and try it out. It can't make it any worse!

They are down low so i think some touch up would look better than the white in the scratch. I am pretty sure i still have the stock gen2 front turn signals if you think they will fit you can have them

Yep, I think the black touch up, if done nice and easy, should hide them pretty good. Let me check with Tony to find out if the turn signals are the same and I'll let you know. Thanks so much!

I just checked about the lights. They are completely different part numbers. I have a set saved in my Ebay folder. Let me see if they are still available.

How about a Sharpie? Will one of those mask the scratches? I know these will drive you nuts because you want it closer to perfect. But hey, the price was right and it's still an awesome bike!!!

I know they have those paint markers at PepBoys. I'm sure that anything will look better than "white" scratches. I'll give it a try on the weekend. I don't think that a Sharpie will have that "gloss" look to it. I have one here with me though so I'll give it a shot on a inconspicuous area to see. I'll let you know how it goes.

They also make a gloss Sharpie paint pen so look for one of those. ;)

Good to see that the PO didn't drill the side panels to install those ugly turn signals (well i guess they were "in" back in the 80's and 90's...lol).

Gen II turn signals will not work, but gen I ones might. I know the lenses and housing are the same, just not sure about the way it mounts.

I think you'll be able to get a set sooner or later. Also the YZF600 front turn signals should be the same if I remember correctly and they are plentiful on eBay ;)

Ok, Billy here they are:

Right turn signal off YZFR1 2000 R1, fits R6, YZF600R, YZF750R, YZF1000R, OEM | eBay

1997 Yamaha YZF 750 YZF750 Left Front Turn Signal | eBay

These two should be all you need for the front. I couldn't find anybody selling a complete set of front ones in decent shape...

I am going to use this guy: Yamaha YZF1000 YZF750 YZF600 YZF Front Turn Signals NEW | eBay They are brand new and it's the same price as if I bought the two used ones. Thanks anyway though, good looking out!

Well those look to be aftermarket ones so not sure about the fit and finish, although they look ok in the pic.

Also don't forget that you'll need the metal piece that fits in the back of it that actually "locks" it in place onto the fairing. I doubt those come with it, but I know I saw it on one of the ones that I sent you the link for. I may have a "spare" one, but have to check. It's item #9 that I'm referring to and you'll need one for each side:

PartShark.com - Motorcycle Parts, ATV Parts, UTV Parts, PWC Parts, Powersports Apparel, Motorcycle Accessories for OEM and Aftermarket.

Not sure buying those from Canada will be worth it...

I'll have to ask the seller if they have the locking plate or not.

lolup Thanks Ken. I have a bid or two in on the actual lights. Your old lights are now residing in the mid-west. Haha! Unexpected circumstances buddy, thats all I can say. Next time around we'll have to sign a :deal:

I'm officially done with all bodywork!! I brought up the last piece to clean. The other mid-panel is now with all the other pieces and ready to go on the bike.
