Stupid People in India

So I just heard a story on NPR.

4% of the children in India are cross-eyed. This can lead to the brain causing blindness by shutting down eyesight. It simply overloads the brain.

India offer FREE treatment. But...it is considered "good luck" for the family to have a child with crossed eyes.

As stupid as that is, how are they supposed to know any different? Often, all they know is death and horror from Aids from the day they are born. There's no school or media or any other social & moral structure to teach you that kind of stuff is wrong and stupid--only death. Death everywhere, every day.

Any one of us would be just as stupid, desperate and ignorant if we were born into that nightmare.

Fair point. These beliefs are typically promoted by sangomas (witch doctors) who hold significant sway in tribal communities.

Although it does not help when prominant 'educated' leaders of southern africa state a) taking a shower after sex will prevent aids, and b) HIV and AIDS are not related.

It all depends from which perspective you look at it!! :D

From mine point of view it's stupid to try and have children if you and your partner are both infected by AIDS, but some people seem to disagree.
 
Stupid and ignorant have entirely different menaings, k'now? Calling an ignorant person stupid makes you ignorant in your own way. Not defending or bashing anyone, just saying...
 
the stupid part is not that some people (ok many many millions of people) are ignorant; it's that they unfortunately exist within repressive communities/countries/continents which, even in this day and age, either can't provide or have laws against the sharing of knowledge and better understanding so that their lives aren't so wasted and beleaguered by said ignorance.

It's stupid that we spend so much effort learning about potential planets so far off they might not even exist today, but we don't do enough about the abundance of behavior like these examples.
 
In Afghanastan, the Taliban put poison gas in a school that sent 160 girls to the hospital. They don't want the girls going to school!
 
Unfortunately though this sort of crap doesn't just happen in third world countries......its also happening right now in Australia, the US, the UK etc etc. The real question is what are we doing about it?
