You may be interested in a little scam and entrapment exercise the NSW Highway Patrol have been running recently at Maquarie Pass, Illawarra Highway near Wollongong...BE AWARE!!! DONT GET TRAPPED!!!

Maquarie Pass is a favourite for motorcycle riders on weekends and many hundreds will make their way along its scenic winding length visiting the cafes and pie shop, meeting and socialising, particularly when it is a fine sunny day as it was this Saturday (March 9th 2013).

Taking advantage of the fine warm conditions the NSW Highway Patrol set up a TRAP for Motorbike Riders where they waited on a gravel verge at the bottom of the Pass before the up hill run in a Blue Toyota Hilux SUV. They wait for riders to ride along the straight, just before the first L/H corner whereupon the SUV blasts off the verge in a shower of dust and accelerates into the path of the Riders then suddenly slowing and forcing the riders to either brake heavily or if they think the SUV is actually politely waving them past, actually overtake by momentarily crossing the double white lines, which can be done very quickly and safely (on a motorbike) and is what I and many others did on this day. Every person at the top of the hill at the Pie Shop got fined...read on....

The sting then takes place a few kilometres up the road where a couple of Highway Patrol cars are set up with cones and signs and pick riders and book them after being radioed their details by the Blue SUV team who have recorded the whole shabby ENTRAPMENT exercise on a GOPro video.

The waiting Cop tried to tell me i was doing well over the speed limit, to which i replied that is BULLSHIT!! I didnt get out of second gear. They slowed right down to 40km/h and pulled to the left slightly, so basically set the trap and invited me to overtake. As i was in 2nd gear it didnt take much to get around the Blue SUV, tuck back in and continue up the hill at the speed limit (there were other cars up ahead anyway) I was not in a rush as i could see them and knew it was going to be slow going up, the only reason i overtook the Blue SUV was because of his actions slowing and moving over.

I got a fine for crossing unbroken lines ($298) and 3 demerit points

I will be speaking to my Lawer and taking this matter to Court!!! No way am i going to sit back and allow this unethical dog act to continue!! SCUM of the earth PIGS!!

I would like to request any other parties that got TRAPPED and may be interested in a class action. The appropriate and ethical application of the law and traffic regulations obviously were not undertaken here. This was just the revenue raising. How can this ENTRAPPMENT sting really contributs to improving road safety when Police areacting like this. Im sure much of this behaviour from the NSW Cops is outside the guidelines of the Police Commissioner rules and guidelines.

Lets put a stop to being targeted by this shabby revenue raising scam.

wow that could turn out really badly with the SUV hitting someone, hope you win the fight keep us posted on the outcome, scumbags

Read about similar things happening in NSW last year. I think it was in AMCN, maybe a letter to a few popular M/C magazines might find a few more affected riders. Entrapment in NSW & coppers hiding in the bush in camoflage with radars in Vic, reminds me why I mainly ride on week days! Best of luck with it!

Well well well, our boys in blue are at it again!!! Nothing better to do than to raise revenue. After reading your story I can suggest this.
1) The SUV pulls out in front that causes you to brake heavily. This is obviously going to make you believe that he is a danger to yourself and to others.

2) The SUV slows down and waves you over. Perhaps "he had his blinker on" to turn off to the side of the road. I wonder if the go pro will show that.

3) apparently the HWY patrol can estimate your speed visually and are so called "trained" in this. I would like to know how they would estimate this on a road thats just a series of curves!

4)You can tell the judge that you obviously thought that this guy is a dick and a danger to yourself so you overtook him safely over the double lines to avoid an accident because he was moving to the left as you believe he was going to pull over as he was way below the speed limit and slowling down to what you believe he was going to stop at the side of the road and even waved you to overtake him, even though you knew that he is not allowed to stop there.

5)Best lawyer to use is Graeme Morrisson at Church street w'gong. I've used his services before and he loves giving it to the boys in blue. Elect to take this to court, plead not guilty, get the police brief and see what evidence are they going to provide to the court. Remember the onus of proof is on the police to prove your guilty.

6) obviously this was a police sting. Perhaps under the freedom of info act you get the scope of the operation. A formal complaint to the Poliice ombudson may assist you.

Good luck in your endeavours! I'll be watching now when I'm going up that way. I was going for a cruise there tomorrow.

I must be lucky, I've not had many run ins with cops on my bike travels. I lived 5 years in Melbourne and travelled all over the state (42,000 km total) and was pulled over once on the top end of the Black Spur by a traffic cop checking registration and m/c licenses. I stopped, he glanced down and saw my rego on the swingarm, I showed him my license, and before I could undo my chin strap he said, "No problem, have a nice day".

And now I live about 5 miles from Luckenbach, TX which is a biker haven, they always have some gig going which attracts thousands of bikes, mostly H-D's, and I've never been stopped or harassed while riding in the area. You just don't see that many cops.....just plenty of empty road.

There are a few areas that seem to collect squids and cops, in that case I try to avoid those areas. This sounds like one of them.

How does behaving dangerously increase public safety? Sounds like the QLD scam where an unmarked WRX tailgated sports-bikes until they snapped and accelerated away to safety when the Subaru would activate it's hidden red and blues and fine them. How many cameras are we going to need?

Yikes.

I def need to get myself a go pro, possibly two just to keep a recorded eye on everything happening around me.....

this happens all the time on the great ocean road.

I hate cops that think they are above the law. There are some good ones too but it seems like more and more bad.

unfortunately the public keep screaming we need more police and that our roads are unsafe.

so the government listens and keeps hiring TRAFFIC cops.
instead of doing what was ACTUALLY asked which is hiring REAL cops. and FIXING the disgrace of roads we drive on.
and continue to lower speed limits

last time i was in court i had to prove i was innocent. not them prove my guilt...
its not like in the movies.

There was a black Dodge Magnum SRT edition that used to do that on the 101 freeway in Scottsdale. He was undercover Scottsdale PD and would entice people to race. I knew a guy that had previously been undercover Mesa PD and he raced him one day up to just under 100 (so he could get reckless driving on the guy) and when he finally pulled over the guy I knew, then they flashed badges and they had a laugh about it.

I've seen unmarked Scottsdale PD in black Toyota 4Runner, black Dodge Magnum, black Cutlass. You can always spot them because of the Radio/CB antenna and they are always black. There is one silver Crown Vic and the rest are black with dark tints.

I reiterate "How does behaving dangerously make us safer"? It's like having a police officer throw a punch at you and then charging you with fighting!

Did you represent yourself in court melbfz8?

yes i did.
and essentially the judge was like. well did you "insert offence here" and i was like due to the circumstances. the judge cut me off and said it doesnt matter you still broke the law regardless of the build up that let to it.
its all just black and white to them.
its like speeding up to overtake someone doing 80 than 60 than 90 than 60 again < (how many times have you come up to people doing that) in a 100 zone and you speed up to overtake them safely and thats exactly where the cunt will be with a radar and he does you for speeding.
doesnt care about what caused it or whether it was safe to do so. you still broke the law by speeding.
its not about safety. it never has been. its about handing out infringements and getting surplus up for their station so they can hire more staff. they dont get commission on handing out fines (as much as we would all believe they do) but they get budgets for their station. if they can hand out enough fines and meet their budgets they can hire more staff. thats why theyre always looking for more and more ways to fine you and get you for the most ridiculous things. eg going into a servo through the no exit even though you had just ran out of fuel.
and before you guys carry on with a servo is on private property and they cant fine you. anything with free access is regarded as hiway and police are able to fine you. eg;
you pull your car into your drive way and shut the gates. that is now private property and you can ask the police to leave your premesis.
you pull up same instance, and gates are open. police have right of way.
