My mechanic says that Castrol and Motul oils won't mix, and if I put Motul in after draining the old Castrol the clutch will be destroyed and need replacing.

This sounds a bit odd, most oils are mixable. Then again, I found a forum post where the guy said that the Castrol and Motul oils formed some kind of goo.

Does anyone know for sure ?

if that were the case, you could never change oils :ugh:

Motul - FAQ

"Until now, I have used a competitor's oil in my 4-stroke engine vehicle. Can I use Motul without damaging my engine?

4-stroke engine oils are compatible and miscible.

You can therefore safely use a quality Motul lubricant in your vehicle from now on"

I used Motul and switched to mobile1 and before was the yamha stuff inside which is not even synthetic. No problems switching and nothing broke. In general motor oils are mixable, just use a motorcycle oil because of the wet clutch.

I read about the same on Castrol's page. They say that it is a specific demand for all certified oils to be mixable.

Yep,rubbish

Get a new mechanic.

Amen.

just use a motorcycle oil because of the wet clutch.

More internet bs. My 89 GSXR1100 had 62K, of which 60K were with nothing but M1 syn. Oh, and that included lots of the EC2 stuff. I even used the M1 0-40wt in the FZ1 for a while. But lately Ive been useing Shell T6. She shifts much better, and the bike has over 40K on the clock.

Sounds kinda typical. Motul being a French oil. The French are soooo exclusive and generally don't mix with anyone ... errr... anything.

But, yeah, nonsensical advice. If true, you could never change oil brand in your engine - the residual left in the engine after draining would react with the new "different" oil and turn to goo - or molasses - or concrete - or ....

Not a very knowledgeable mechanic... But highly opinionated. Just the type that it's nice not to deal with.

Motul doesn't even make oil, they just buy it from a large refinery and sell it with their own brand...

I use Silkolene 10w50 syn, I like their gel chain lube also, no reason to buy this brand other then... I like the name and they gave me a few t-shirts :)

oh, and.. find a smarter mechanic ...:+2:

^ This, I had a friend who would only use Honda oil in his bike and told me I should do the same. Well last I checked Honda doesn't have an oil refinery so guess what...

[FWIW, Rotella T6 is a JASO-MA certified oil which certifies it as a 'motorcycle oil'. /QUOTE]

Which is primarily aimed at the diesel market. Some people would argue that if it doesnt have a pic of a mc on the bottle...

Many a "discussion" has gone on and on about useing M1 EC2 oils in a wet clutch. And maybe they are right. All I know is the I personally have yrs of mc use with EC2 oils (Mobil 1), and have never lost a clutch or motor.

Sv: Mixing oils OK ?

I'm inclined to go for Castro Power 1 since it has that tri-something tech which promises smoother gear shifts. And my gearbox isn't exactly smooth.. Which oils do you other guys

Sent from my Millennium Falcon

Said it before, I'll say it again, and probably again, and again... :embarrased:

I use what is on sale as fresh clean oil is better than old funky oil.:cheerleader:

Been happy with Motul 5100, but this change went to the Motul 7100 as it wasn`t much dearer and a full syn oil[well so they say] gearchanges have been good with either oil.Usually change oil at 5,000klms but going to leave to 10,000klms with the Motul 7100.I know it will get a bit dirty looking but should stay to grade.By leaving until 10,000klms it will work out a lot cheaper than using the motul 5100 and changing at 5,000klms.Most of my riding is longer trips and very little around town and my bike never goes near red line [old rider] but everyone will have a different opinion

Why I'm actually investigating instead of buying the oil on sale is because my gearbox has a "personality", and on one occasion, I used a cheaper Castrol oil and badabing, my gearchanges were smooth. Well, not any more. So I want that behavior again, and can't remember which oil that was. I'm guessing something with a "thicker" oil film ..

I've been using whatever Castrol fully synthetic oil my genius mechanic was putting in, and at around 7000 km i started to subjectively hear and feel the engine run differently, and after an oil change I immediately could feel that it was running on fresh oil.

I don't think it will destroy anything. Personally I prefer not mixing brand or synth and dyno oil but it's from my own preference... no big study group thing...
