Hi guys, I am new here. I have been reading the forum for a while and I have gathered a huge wealth of information. I have been riding motorcycles for about 9 years but I am now a proud new owner of a 2008 FZ1. It all started in October when I was getting ready to come back from Afghanistan. I recently sold my 2006 YZF600R. I wanted another bike that was comfortable like the 600R but had a little more power. I was contemplating an R1 but the more affordable and more comfortable FZ1 seamed appealing. So, the search was on. I found a red 2008 FZ1 from a dealership close by my base and picked it up on my first weekend home. Less than 2,000 miles on the odometer and only $5,000. It was all stock with the exception of a Two Brothers exhaust. I had mixed feelings at first. This was the first time I rode a naked bike, and I wasn't used to all the wind resistance on my body. I did like power and comfort though, and I was hooked pretty soon.
After a couple weeks of riding I began to hate the two brothers exhaust more and more. It just seemed loud and obnoxious, and I didn't really like the sound. Research led me to a few different pipes and I decided that if I was going to spend money on a pipe then I might as well invest in a full system. I found a good price on the Graves full exhaust and got it along with a Power Commander V. I installed them and couldn't be more happy with the sound and I did notice a slight increase in power. I also got a K&N air filter and installed it at the same time. After these changes I just wanted more.
Oh yeah, before that I installed flush mount blinkers, integrated rear turn signals, fender eliminator, carbon fiber frame sliders, and carbon fiber bar ends. I did all that first.
After the exhaust and PCV upgrade, I got the itch for more power. I found a real good price for grave's velocity stacks, and installed those along with the airbox mod. I also removed the servo motor and AIS blocking everything off and adding the graves servo eliminator. I was happy to get rid of all that stuff. I know some people here have chosen not to do all that because it doesn't add an increase in power, and lets get real, there is no noticeable advantage to dropping 1-2 pounds, but I sure will be happy when it comes time to change those spark plugs. Anyway, after I added the velocity stacks and modded the airbox, I noticed the biggest changes in power. There was a horrible flat spot below 5K RPM's, where the engine just bogged down, but over 5K this bike transformed into a screaming banshee. I just couldn't stand that dead spot though. I searched online for PCV maps that fit my mods and that is when I discovered Ivan's website.
I realized that no downloadable map will be perfect, so I will eventually need to dyno tune this baby. So, I wanted to take care of all the mods I could realistically want before spending hard earned money on a custom tune. I talked to Ivan and ordered the FCE, modified sub-throttle plates, and an Ignition Module for the PCV. I just got all that installed today and added the map he gave me. I can't tell a difference in power with the new equipment and map, but the dead spot below 5K RPM's is gone, and everything is smoother. I couldn't be happier with my bike now. I have achieved a lot in just a couple months. Now I need to save up for a custom tune, and some more carbon fiber.
