Did I ever tell you guys how much I hate chains?

Ever seen BMW shaft drive crap itself or ridden one on the way out? I'll stick with a relatively cheap n easy to replace chain thanks.

There is a used 1200R currently advertised for sale by a BMW dealer. Seems like it has about 48,000 miles. They say their "safety inspection" revealed that the rear main seal was leaking (engine seal) so they replaced that - but that leak took out the clutch plates, also - so they replaced those. And they also went ahead and replaced both front and rear shaft bearings.
I don't know about you - but that seems like a lot of kind of major stuff going bad with a shaft drive - on a supposedly "high quality" motorcycle. They claimed - no worries for the new owner for a long time, though.

Looks like BMW motorcycles are like their four wheeled cousins - prone to often and expensive maintenance -- essentially rich people's play things, perhaps?

Same here in Florida when it rain almost everyday during summer time. Been looking around for a new ride lately. If everything goes as plan I might be able to get one later this year. Driveshaft is on the list... The S10 as one, but not sure I want to spend 15K on a 600 lbs dirt bike?

I'm wondering if your chain really needs all that lube. Maybe the lube you are doing is attracting dirt and creating a very messy chain.

I ride daily in the rain and this is the source of my needing to clean and lube every day. The nasty mix of rain and salt and sand does a number on my chains. Some kerosene to clean it and a light application of lube is all I use. I'm quite anal with that stuff, though

Even without rain... still need some lube.

When I did my 4K miles bike trip last year I had new rubbers and the chain only had 2-3K miles if I can remember. I lube the chain the night before I left Laconia, NH (still hot form the ride) I left Laconia and rode 1550 miles in 23:36 (That was good for a IBA Bun Burner 1500 ) I never though about lubing the chain... just kept hammering miles and stopping for fuel. By the the time I get home the chain and sprockets were completely toast!!!

OK Dustin, I'm thinking you should go for the K1300R. It is a beautiful naked bike and wouldn't be that much of a departure from your 919! The R1200 is nice but that K1300R just looks like a beautiful brute! I think there are a couple for sale down in Seattle, maybe you should go buy yourself a late Xmas present? You know you want too!

Yes, sir! Right away!

Look at that thing, sick :)

This thread is fun!

Dustin I know you love older bikes. My dream shaft drive motorcycle is.........

The Honda V65 Magna. It's the first motorcycle I ever rode on the back of pillion as a 6 year old. Scared the crap out of me but I've always loved that bike.

I was thinking the same thing and have tried a number of lubes over the years. Generally, I have had the same experience with Motul Chain Lube Road, Motul Chain Lube Off Road, PJ-1 Blue Label, Dupont Teflon Chain Saver and one more I forgot the name of.

I had a fellow FZ1 owner and motorcycle mechanic swear up and down for Maxima Chain Guard lube. I did go look it up and it said it slung shhh all over, so I don't know if you've ever tried that.

My First streetbike was an 85 V65 magna Black. AWESOME!!
I guess that explains why I am back to a V4 drive shaft. I love power!!
When I get old and slow down I might consider a FZ1 but for now. I still enjoy romping around on my Max.
LOL

I love the old magna as well but loved the old sabre even more. Right before I found my gen 1 I looked at an old sabre with 14k original miles and was about to pull the trigger when the fz popped up for the same price, but 20 years newer.

Yes you are. I have never lubed any chain that much. But, its your ride, do as you like, right?

I have over 40K on my 07 OEM chain & rear sprocket and I ride in the rain (commute) when it happens. Maybe your over thinking this?

Actually have a bunch of friends riding GS, K, R, and by and large have no problem and love them. The 2 I've seen that failed were on tour and and ended those guys tours. Not to mention the hefty rebuild although 1 was under warranty.
Having ridden shafties I'm a fan until they fail and shaft you lol

Maybe your over thinking this?

I don't think so, it's just awfully unfriendly to chains up here at this time of year. The rain and muck and things they spray on the roads creates a hell of a mess.

I cleaned my bike last night. When I was done, every inch of the swingarm, the rear wheel, the sprocket and the chain was clean and shiny. The rear wheel would spin free and easy with little noise or resistance. It was beautiful and perfect.

I just got in from a quick 20 miles to snap a photo for my girlfriend. I took a photo of my chain before I give it another clean and scrub. The wheels spins with resistance now and the links all clunk and creak from the salt and sand inside it

Don't get me wrong, I'm not like this all year long. In the summer, I rarely have to touch the chain
