Akrapovic or Yoshimura full system one of these days...

Apparently the Yoshi system is the best for the FZ1.
US tuner Ivan had it made to his specs and it has more power down low and in the midrange compared to the Akra and the like.
I reckon the Akra is a much nicer looking system though.

BTW the Akra here in Oz is over $2000.

I agree on that one!!! I like the shape of the Akra muffler over the Yoshi muffler.

Well for now that makes my mind up that I'm better off with the Yoshi system!
 
I think it's very helpful, whenever contemplating an expensive purchase for your hobby, or anything else for that matter, is to sit down and put on paper what your trying to accomplish and what your expectations are. Often an urge to make a purchase happens when you see someone else do it and it seems like a good idea. But, after some contemplation of the pros and cons of the purchase, the glow dims, a lot. Full exhaust systems are about $1000 or better if you want one that actually performs as advertised. Then, you will almost certainly need a fueling modified (PCIII or PCV) for another $300 or better. Finally, you need some dyno time for anothe few hundred bucks. If you are really expecting a good H.P./TQ increase you should be able to calculate how much it will cost to attain your expected result. If you don't actually race, you'll never use the increase on the street. I don't mean to take the wind out of anyone's sails, but be smart about spending a lot of money for something you'll seldom or never use. In a time when it's getting far more expensive just to put gas in the tank, does anyone want to end up with a screamer they can't afford to ride?

Thanks for your words Don. Too true too! This thread is a tool for me to use to evaluate what to buy and how much to spend.
If riding a bike was only for cheap travel then most of us wouldn't even go near an FZ1. For most of us it's about looks, function, performance etc...

I won't be spending much over the 1000 for the exhaust and depending on how the bike runs, I'll decide after that if I buy a PCV. I've already been to my local bike performance shop for expert advise on PCIII/V and dynoing.

I agree that if money is an issue then just stick with the slip-on.
Now if money is no object, go nuts.

He's right about needing the PCIII or PCV, you can do serious engine damage after big changes like a full system.
My tuner commented that there was a lean bog at 6000 rpm when he was mapping my FZ1.
Luckily I fit the exhaust and the only place I rode it was to the dyno, so it wasn't an issue.

I was pretty hot and horny to get an aftermarket header a while ago. It would have run about a $1000 with shipping. As beautiful as it is (from a design and looks perspective) I couldn't see spending the cash at this point. It would have meant more cash for Dyno Tuning and a PCV to make it all come together. For what I use the bike for the present set up is definately up to the task . The slip on acomplished my main objective; less weight and better sound. It also seemed to give a very slight boost in power in the mid range (butt dyno measured). I am happy with the way the bike performs. The chin fairing hides the ugly part of the collector well enough for me. I have considered taking the stock header off to polish it (my specialty) and probably will next winter.

As to the OP though: Given the choices that you list (price not withstanding) I would go with the Akrapovic full system based on my preference for looks and performance combined. I prefer the shape and way it is put together, and have not heard anything bad about the Akra.:2cents:

From a purely performance vs cost standpoint the Yosh can't be beat, but it's looks do leave something to be desired when you compare it to the full Akra or even a "sexy" slip-on like the MiVV Suono.

Although I do understand that some do not have the desire to add performance enhancements to their bikes, I think that you are a bit off on some of your comments here. . .
The Yosh system seems to have gone up a bit in Ebay prices recently but in the US can still be had for around $700. I actually purchased my R77 setup new for $620 shipped with a Titanium muffler last fall. These systems are quality pieces and will make a noticeable improvement in performance that you can feel On The Street.
Yes, a Power Commander is pretty much required with a full exhaust system and if you really want to make full use of the potential of the Gen II, so is the air box modification, filter upgrade, smaller butterflies, Ivan's FCE, and perhaps and Ignition module. This "package" along with Ivan's mapping for it (IMHO no need for a custom tune with the top notch performance of the "E Map") will completely transform the FZ1 with smooth, snatch free performance, and significantly more power starting as early 4.5K. If one doesn't make use of a 25hp difference at 7k on the street then an FZ1 is probably not the right choice in the first place. Here are two charts for comparison. The first shows stock vs modded with PCIII, IM, FCE, airbox mod, aftermarket filter, smaller flies and a slip on exhaust (don't know which one.) The second shows the fully modded bike with the full Yosh R77 system. Notice the improvement in the mid range between the fully modded slip on chart and the fully modded with full exhaust system chart. Also, take a look at that stock FZ1 chart and you might think to yourself that Yamaha didn't do such a good job as it is pretty soft in the midrange. Combine that with the throttle snatch issues and IMHO this bike really needs (and most certainly responds to) some modifications.
I purposefully bought an older GENII for little money (06 with 12k miles for $3400 last summer) and then threw $4k in mods at it, both engine performance related as well as suspension, brakes, comfort, utility, and some bling! Basically there is no comparison between a well modded GENII and a stock one. Street or track, the bike can be transformed into one of the best all arounders out there. . . .

I put the Akrapovic full titanium with the CF muffler on my '08 this winter and the thing rocks! Granted the Yosh is more cost effective, but I would go for the Akrapovic any day of the week. I run the Akrapovic on my YZ450f as well and I am an absolute fan of that company now. The headers are starting to turn nice shades because of the heat, but it is still a great looking exhaust.

I vote Akrapovic!

I think it comes down to aesthetics. Some people don't care for the look of the R-77 muffler. I think performance would be comparable. The biggest advantage that I see of going with the Arrow headers is that you can use whatever slip-on muffler you desire (as long a sit was designed to bolt on to the stock header).

The muffler looks good, can the baffle be removed?
If you decide to run it with the baffle installed then I wouldn't waste my money on the headers as you will be restricting the performance of the whole system.

Holy SH!T! I just pulled the trigger on the Arrow headers for my bike. That price is like FREE!

That is a great price for the headers! That's your best option since you already have a nice slip-on.

Pete his bike is the FZ1-N that doesn't come with a center stand from the factory.
