now we get into that touchy area....

I personally use absolutely nothing but K&N Oil Filters... they cost a dollar or so more... but they're worth it IMO.... 17mm nut on the end to make for easy removal and installation... hole drilled in that 17mm nut for safety wire... and I've been using nothing but K&N for years... just my personal preference...

that said, lots of people use fram, lots use purolator, lots use hiflofiltro ...

If I had to say to stay away from any... I'd stay the heck away from the permanent oil filters with the "washable" filter material insert.

Va rider is correct. The K&N is very good. 17mm nut on end is nice.

I use the purolator filter. I like the extra length which means more filtering of oil.

I would not use a Fram after reading another thread (which I can't find). They did a whole thing of cutting them apart and looking at them. Fram had least amount of filter material.

I think with just about any of them if you change the oil and filter in the recommended frequency or even a little under that it will be fine.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have been riding for 21 years and I think everyone at sometime questions the oil and filter thing LOL. But at the rate companies are trying to save a buck on materials who has the time to research al the changes these days?

I have noticed on a few sites, they say on the Purolator site to think twice about using purolator pure one filters on bikes [could have to high a pressure for the oil pump],I have been using these filters now for several years on a honda hornet 919 and with no problems I have only just purchased my 2008 FZ1 and still having 5 of these filters was going to use them on this bike.As the FZ1 revs higher than the hornet, I am having second thoughts, has anybody had an issue? using these filters on a FZ1.

I have used them on the FZ1 in the past, but haven't since I came across that warning. However, I never had an issue with them on the FZ1...

I have run only the Hiflofiltro HF303, Yamaha R1 spec filters, and the Mobil 1, M1 110 on my 06. Both are longer, and have greater capacity than the stock FZ1 filters, but the same overall diameter.

The trick to using these is owning the right oil filter wrench...

...my 2 cents.

Out of this list (not my creation) I use Purolator Pure One PL14612 and clear out the Walmart shelf once a year. ;)

These Oil Filters
have 20 x 1.5mm threads,
14 psi by-pass valve,
anti-drain back valve,
2.3" O.D. gasket
2.5" to 3.5" long.
If you have the room, I recommend the longer filters.

This info is available at Motorcycle Oil Filter Cross Reference

I will link to thier oil filter testing as well.

I highly highly recomend the purolator pure one filter PL14610 for less than 6 dollars it is one of the finest available.

Stay away from the long ones on the Gen II bike as they are very close to the header.

...

Keep an eye out for some amazing deals on Amazon. Earlier this year I picked up five Porolator PureOne's for my car (PL14610) and got them for $25 - $12 rebate so my net cost was $13 for five filters! Can't beat that deal :D

So I take it you are not concerned about the warning from purolator to think twice before using their pure one filters in bikes

The FZ1 pump seems to have no trouble handling the pressure from this filter. I've used it on two FZ6 bikes as well without any issues. I know they recommend the ML line but that line has a cardboard base, or at least it used to. Won't use one with a cardboard anything. ;)

I use the Bosch 3323 which is an 1" or so longer than the Bosch 3300 so. I also like the extra filtering material. I just add slightly more oil at time of change. Available in a pinch at the local Auto Zone or on line.
