Yeah wire it to the tail light or something so it only gets power when the ignition is turned on. I don't think the FZ1 has an accessory socket in the wiring harness, so you'll have to improvise something.

yep as above my correction factor was set to -9.2% or something like that with no conversion, so doesn't matter whether mph or kph it just applies the correction factor

I'm on an MT09 these days and they're all getting their ECUs reflashed by Yamaha dealers. At least two dealers in Melbourne are doing it. Just a matter of having the right cable and software.
There are four bolts that hold the tail section onto the bike, they are underneath the pillion seat. You can only access these bolts from the top to remove them.
There are six wires going to the tail/fender 2 for each indicator and 2 for the number plate light.
