It Finally Happened!

Nice cover Billy! That will look great with the new lid! Kudos for getting a good hot weather jacket. You'll find it a pain when stopped but moving, it keeps you quite cool.

Here's hoping that someone reads the flyer and comes to your aid. The other guy still has not made a claim?

Just About Back To Normal

Richie and I went downstairs after work to get started on putting the bike back to normal. Everything went smoothly except for two minor snags.
I started by loosening up the bars while Richie started on the fairing removal.

Richie made quick work of the ruined fairing so that was out of our way.
IMG_0004-2.jpg

This was the point of impact on the left side, right on the fairing hold down point.
IMG_0006.jpg

The first snag I encountered was that the small nipple that lines up with the hole in the handlebar was filed down, I'm guessing so not to have to drill the straight bars.
IMG_0011-2.jpg

I used my drill with progressively larger bits to make a hole where the plastic pin would have been. I then tapped it out and inserted a small cap screw to act as a protrusion.

With that mod done the choke assembly went back on without twisting around when you pulled the choke lever.

The second snag was on the same side. The new clutch lever had a bushing that is too small for the stock pin. I had to find something to remove the bushing from the bent lever. Once that was done it fit just great.
IMG_0018-1.jpg

I mounted the new stock bars in place and installed the left grip that Tony was nice enough to donate.
IMG_0019.jpg

Richie had already started on the radiator covers. He was a great help to me today.
IMG_0020-2.jpg

The right side went on without a hitch and I tightened everything down snug.
IMG_0021-2.jpg

This was the point of impact. As you can see the fairing mount is pretty much mangled up.

The new bars and levers look great. It's too bad that the tank took that hit as it's an eyesore for sure. I think for the meantime I'm going to use touch-up paint the at least cover the scratch.

Here's the finished job less the left turn signal which I am happy to say will be picking up in the morning bright and early from Spydar.

Hopefully I'll be back from Jersey with enough time to get the signal on and take a ride before the rain comes. I want to personally thank Ken(Spydar), Tony, and Fade (FZ1OA), for all the contributions in getting the bike up and road worthy again. You guys are great!

Nice work from you two! That's a speedy recovery and the new bars look great!

Is there any thought of getting some glass and resin and patching the lower from the inside? Then, using some filler, sand and smooth the outside and get it painted? Just a thought... ;)

Wow Billy that looks great now with the black bars, levers and grips. Like you said too bad about the tank because otherwise you'd be back in business. Just touch it up for now so it doesn't rust and over the Winter either have that one painted or see what turns up on the forums or eBay...you never know ;)

Hey if it doesn't rain and you want to take a ride to the mountain let me know :D

Unfortunately, the fairing at that point is imploded. The hole is probably three times the size of the original mounting hole. Basically the fairing, at least on the left side, is trashed.

Strangely, answering your previous question, the other party involved in the accident, called Geico to file a claim but when asked for his insurance company's name, he did not know. Hmmm?? All the sudden Geico hasn't heard back from him since then. Even though I'll have to wait for the weekdays coming to hope for a witness, I'm going to get the name of his insurance company from Geico Monday and file a claim with them for damages and hospital bills. I figure that at least if I file with them, it will force them to look at the damage to my bike where they will plainly see the discrepancies in this guys story. In the meantime I am going to start riding again and hope to hear from a witness this week coming.

Nice job Billy! The pics are great! I was wondering on the new levers..I ordered a set of those as well, you just used the stock bushing? The one that came with it didn't fit?

Only on the clutch side. The clutch lever came with two bushings with it. Both fit inside each other, so I figured I had to remove the inner one and just use the larger of the two. The problem was that the smaller bushing was too small and the larger one was way too big which made the lever all loose and sloppy. I removed the stock bushing from the old lever and installed it into the new lever all by itself and it was a perfect fit. Not sure why they had it that way, and thank God I didn't toss out the bad lever before doing the switch.

I am sure they make single models designed to fit several different bikes. Rather than repackage for each bike they just include bushings for each.

The bike is done! Unfortunately the weather Gods weren't being cooperative this morning and trashed mine and Tony's ride up to the mountain. I met Ken (Spydar) over in Jersey this morning at 7:40am to pick up the turn signal. Ken is a great guy and how couldn't he be, he was sporting his #88 Dale Jr. Amp shirt today! Any friend of Jr. is a friend of mine! Thanks very much Ken. I know you had to be tired from all the traveling, so for you to meet up so early was extremely nice of you. We must get at least one ride in with Tony before the summer ends.

I got home after sitting in traffic at the GW Bridge (What Else Is New), and installed the turn signal which was in perfect condition. Once I finished I called Tony and found out what the weather was like out west so left the ride for another weekend. I, however, was going to get at least a small jaunt in the books for today so I woke up Richie, got him downstairs, and took off.

The new Tourmaster is nothing short of spectacular! I was feeling a nice breeze through the jacket which by the way is comfortable as heck. The new Shoei RF1000 will take a bit to get used to. The helmet is 20 times more comfortable than my Bell, but with the rear spoiler that they have on the back of the helmet doesn't like when you turn your head at speed nor does it like heavy crosswinds. I'm sure I just need to get used to wearing this type of helmet. The noise level is much lower than that of my Bell, which also will take some time to get used to. I am so used to hearing the exhaust note while riding at speed but now it's like I have ear plugs in.

Now for the bike.......The first thing I noticed with the FZ1 stock handlebars is that visibilty in the mirrors dramatically improves! The new bars combined with the mirror mod is absolutely awesome! You see literally no elbows at all, only the lanes behind you. I can actually see the lane I'm riding in as well. Before you were able to see the lanes to either side and had to bend your head to see what was immediately behind the bike.

Handling......Again, I have to get used to the new bars. Gone is the quick flickability that I had with the straight bars, even with the forks lowered through the tree. On the plus side though, the comfort level went up from a 5 to a 10! I was never so comfortable on this bike as I was today. The bars are high and back, and with my short arms, makes riding a real pleasure! With the new bars packed with sand and plugged on each end, vibration was none existent except for a resonant vibration when the bike hits 4k in 5th gear. When in 6th and doing the speed limit you feel nothing.

Richie and I made a large loop racking up about 48 miles. The weather was deteriorating rapidly and I wanted to make it home without getting wet. Not to mention the crosswinds were kicking up even making Richie grab a hold of me a couple of times. Thats the one downfall in not having the lower fairings on the bike. It's also the reason that I will sooner than later have another set of lowers on the bike.

I guess other than insurance issues, this will be the end of this thread. I really want to express my gratitude to all the guys who physically got me back on the road in such a short time. Tony (NJFZ1), thanks for the grips. They are nice and thick the way I like my grips. Ken (Spydar), thanks so much for the new turn signal. It works perfectly! Thanks Alan (Fade), from the FZ1OA site for the new handlebars and bar ends. Without your help I'd still be looking at the bike instead of riding it. I also want to thank all the forum members who have given me words of support and well wishes since this ordeal started. In my life I can count on two hands how many good friends I have kept, but in the short time on this site I would need 4 or 5 hands to count how many great people and friends I have met here on the site. You guys are really a "class act".

I couldn't end this thread without one more shot of the bike sporting Ken's turn signal. It was the last piece of the puzzle!

Glad you're back on the road Billy! It started raining here about 20 minutes after I got back, but it wasn't much and now it has stopped. However, I'm sure more rain is headed our way. We'll be riding again soon enough...
