How many miles on your fz1??

56K on my 2012. My rear Conti Road Attack 3 has close to 5K on it. Looks like a new PR6 will be coming soon.

The Contis are nice handling tires, but I think the PRs last a little longer, and the difference in handling is almost nil. Michelins are a lot easier to spoon on, too... 5K is good for a rear for me, but the PRs get a slight edge in mileage and ease of replacement.

I'm at 77.4K, put on 3K since 9/22, not bad for a non-commuter. The PR4s are still going, but their end is near. They've worn beautifully. The original BT tires from Bridgestone were the worst I've experienced as far as un-even wear goes.

Bike needs a serious cleaning after being at the beach on Nov 1, but temps today thru Friday are going to be around 70, so may have to put the cleaning off and just hose off the salt.

I'm looking at tires and wear... The Conti Road Attack 3 hit the wear bar before the last ride. I was thinking it has close to 5K on it. Looking at the maintenance records, it now has 3400 miles on it after that ride! My PR5 and PR6 tires were getting at least 5K, up to near 6K. Ordering a Road 6 today. Hopefully the Conti on the front will be ok for a little while. The front will get changed in another 2K or so. I don't think I've ever had a rear tire last over 6K. maybe it has something to do with throttle usage...

Can’t let seals go……. they can ruin brake pads. There was just another thread about Gen 2 seal replacing.

Bought my '04 Gen 1 with 66k on the clock, haven't added much as I have been working on fitting a new fairing and about to sort out the Water pump leak and give it a full service20241230_130455.webp20241229_185353.webp

Well, lets see here. My 2002 FZ1 has 130K miles on it. The blue 2001 model, is barely broken in at 58K miles.
Have a new to me, set of front forks for the ol' 2002 model, coming in tomorrow. Off a 2002 model with only 37K miles on them. No accident, the owner lunched the engine. So the bike is being parted out. Got these for a great price, so I will throw them on, and see how they do. If they are okay, then I will pull them off, and change the fork fluid.
Interesting fact, the fork seals on the 2002 model I have, never leaked! Twenty three years old, and never a weep or leak. Amazing!
Okay, lets see if this goes through. What do a neoprene salesman and a eskimo, have in common? A tight seal! Well, my friends think its funny!
Oh yeah, had the front forks on the 2001 model, rebuilt at 35K miles. Its good to go.
Adios

Dean, Does the 2002 consume any oil?

I’ve gotten some low mile forks off the Bay, but as the years go by they are harder to find.

Good morning, sir:
I don't do long distance touring on the 2002 model anymore, or go with the Santa Cruz guys, for fast three day weekend, Sierra Mountain rides. I am currently using the 2002 model, for riding to our twice weekly, breakfast gigs. In that vein, it does not use hardly any oil. If I push it, it will use oil. On our Death Valley rides, it use to go through almost half of a quart. Mind you, we were doing over the "ton", quite often. I was really hammering the ol' thing! I don't do that, anymore. Like me, too old! Lol!
This last summer, I took the 2001 model on a 2,600 mile tour of the north-west. I used about four ounces of oil, on the complete tour! Course I was not hammering the heck out of it, but at times, I did push it!
These gen.1's, are amazing bikes! If I had bags of disposable income and I don't, I would indeed purchase a new bike. I would probably sell the high mileage FZ1, but I would NOT sell, the low mileage bike. To me, that bike is too great to sell. Does everything for me, at 95%.
As for the incoming front forks, we shall see. First thing I will do, after looking the fork tubes/sliders over very closely, is taken my very fine Arkansas flat sharping stone, and run it over the tubes, to flatten any nicks, in said tubes. Gives me something to do. Rough life, being retired! Lol!
You all have a great day, now.
P.S. Isleoman, what weight fork oil do you use? The book calls for 01M, which I believe is 5wt. or 7.5wt. Please let me know what you use. I would appreciate your views on that question. Hope you are doing well.

Dean, I’m usually somewhere in the 6 to 7 range. I say somewhere because I typically am blending two different weights. Was told by Max Traxxion that blending is perfectly acceptable. I’m 195 lbs. and use the Traxxion 1.05 springs.

When I worked I use to have my machinist friend put my tubes in a lathe and spin them at low rpm, while using fine emory cloth with oil and light pressure.

If I can’t see any pits now days, and they weren’t weeping at the seals I leave them alone and just change oil. If they were weeping then I just spin them manually using same emory and oil. Deep pits will need the stone.

Back in the day Ravenrider use to be ultra concerned about wear on the inside of the lower tubes and inspecting them with camera. It’s not something I obsess over.

I’m sure the last set I re-used had more than 60K on them and I just used new teflon sliders. Between what came on my two bikes and ones I’ve bought off the bay I probaly have six sets of forks. Sounds like a lot, but almost 400K miles divided by 6 = 60K a set. I wouldn’t buy a set if I couldn’t see the milage on the speedo in the seller's other ads.

Cool. Thanks for the info. Have to check my storage locker, as I think I still have some 7.5wt. left from my last fork oil change. I will pick up some 5wt., no matter.
Good point about the mileage. I did see the instrument cluster unit from the donor bike, with the unit turned on, and showing 37,142 miles. So we should be good.
Oh yes, the forks are here, and they look good. Tiny bit of speckles of rust on one leg, but just above the bottom fork clamp. Nothing the fork sliders will ever touch. Now I just need to find my sharpening stone, and take care of any tiny nicks. I used some blue Magic to clean the fork tubes, and they look fine. Settings on the forks have been done for my weight of 180 pounds, so almost ready to pop them on the bike.
New adventure, for an old man of 80 years of age! Lol!
All the best,
Dean

Hello again:
I found my Arkansas flat sharpening stone, and now both fork tubes, are nick free.
The 24 m.m. nut on top of the fork tubes, does not have any marks on them, so I can assume they have never been removed. So I think the inside of the forks, have never been removed. Fine with me.
Slider bottoms are a bit dirty, but that will be addressed, very soon. As soon as it warms up here, however. We are experiencing cold weather here, at the present time. Only got up to 58 degrees, today! Terrible! Almost too cold to ride, says me! Lol! Yeah I know, central Ca. wimp!
All in all, having fun with motorbikes.
Adios
P.S. Found the stone, so I took my Swiss Army "Tinker" knife, to said stone. Main blade can now shave forearm hair! Lol!

46K miles on my 2009 FZ1. 167K on my 2009 FJR.
What a shame they discontinued the FJR in the US. Have always had a close eye on that bike throughout the yrs as an eventual replacement for the FZ1. There really is only one bike that I know of still in that category, the BMW k1600 gt. And that is like 10k more.
