Gen 3 FZ1

I found this mock up online rumoured for 2011. R1 Crossplane powerplant, 6 piston radial brakes and upgraded suspention. Less comfortable seating position but looks nice!

It's actually from a site that does a lot of photochopping and posts them as their "wish list" so don't plan on that one arriving. Now, they DO tell ya right up front that chopped the FZ1 and R1 to create this beast. :D

Looking at past models, Yamaha does not put the latest and greatest R1 engine into the FZ1 right away. I would say forget about seeing the crossplane engine in the next gen FZ1. The 6 piston calipers may make it, but a more likely possibility would be 4 piston radial mounted ones. Either way I am sure it will be a great bike.

I will take 1. As far as the the fz1 being a sport touring bike I dont think thats the case. If you want a sport touring bike buy an FJR. You can transform the bike into a touring bike, but you can do that to any bike. If they came out with an Fz1 that looked like that I think they would have success with sales!!

The FZ1 was originally marketed as a sport touring bike for the person that still wanted a cool looking bike with the occasional track day. If it wasn't it wouldn't have all the vibration isolation features and upright sitting position that it did.

I'm not saying that this bike wouldn't sell well, but by the time it has evolved so close to an R1, it is no longer an FZ1. By that point, they should just rename it to something denoting it as a naked R1.

I'm on the sport touring side of this debate (sort of). What appeals to me about our bikes, both the Gen I and II is the versatility. The rider can make it whatever he or she wants with very little fuss. I hope Yamaha keeps that in mind with the next generation FZ1. My 02 model is the perfect mix of comfort and sportiness for my skills, if I want a low slung sportbike I would just buy the R1. I will take the cross plane engine though.

Ok I agree the Fz1 is a versatile bike. My opinion of the fz1 is not a sport touring bike especially with the gen 2 which has all the sport bike features with upright seating. I basically call the Fz1 "The old mans R1" Again my opinion. I know alot of people set there bikes up for touring, but that does not make it a sport touring bike. I have loaded down my Suzuki M109 with bags backrest and all but it is still a not a touring motorcycle. I see the argument here but I would love to hear other views from people with Gen 2 FZ1's. Ride safe..

Being 44, I am an "old man" to who Yamaha markets the R1 to. I still have the desire for an R1 but a body that reminds me that I am out of the demographic. I love my 2008 FZ 1 and have made the additions to use it as a touring bike, which is what I enjoy doing. That being said, zoom in on my tires and you will see that this old man can still ride ! Thankfully so can the FZ. I like the look of the "gen 3 mock-up" But the bike would be much less usefull with that shaved R 1-esk tail section. But even old men can still look at supermodels, they just don't look back.:poke:

I agree with you on that one. I don't remember it ever being marketed as a sport tourer but a "naked standard", or a modern version of the universal Japanese motorcycle. From what I hear from friends who own it the second generation bike isn't as comfortable for long rides. One co-worker who went from a V-Strom to the FZ1 was disappointed in comfort so it doesn't seem like the best choice for some. I just like the fact that there is an R1 that's suitable for us creaky old men. I was actually pretty excitied to get a new FZ1 but the things I heard about comfort kind of put me off. I'd like to hear thoughts on it as well. Is it easy to be on around town all day or take a 200 mile plus day ride on? I can ride the 02 for 400 miles a day over a week although it gets a little harder ever day. I know I couldn't do that on an R1. With the bad stock seat on my Vmax, the FZ1 is actually more comfortable on longer trips.

I just hope manufacturers continue making jack of all trades motorcycles that go fast, I'm not quite old and creaky enough for a cruiser yet.

as far as comfort on my Fz1, as soon as i break in my new corbin, and get some risers I will be able to tell you how comfortable it is. Me and a few friends of mine one owns a Concours the other 2 on m109s will be doing 2000 miles in three day going from Houston to Arkansas and back on Nov 5, 6, and 7th. I will let everyone know how comfortable or not the fz1 is. I will have soft bags on it and alot of gear strapped down. We will see how much of a touring bike this is come next month.

The stock seat isn't very good at all on the Gen II for touring. The Top Saddlery is though and I can tour all day long with the FZ1.

I almost hate to point it out, but if you drive a sportbike like the FZ1, and you put all the Givi or Shad cases on it, you ARE on a sport-tourer at that point. Even with the luggage, you can still carve the corners. It IS a supersport. And, if you load it up with gear and you're touring, it IS a tourer. ;) I'd call it my own humble opinion but I sort of see it as plain old black and white fact. :D

It IS what you do with it. I see no valid argument one way or the other. Some people do less with bikes that can do more and some people do more with bikes that were intended to do less. As long as you are doing what you are passionate about on your bike I am behind you 100%

I'll beleive it when I can touch it. It's a big question is will it come to North America? Getting the euro models of any jap company has been a shot in the dark. EXP: MT-01, CB1000R, Super Beldor, Zeffer and so on. We get screwd. The market is a cruiser & race bike scene. The market for standard bikes here is limited at best.

So what your telling me is if I put a givi or shad case on an R1 it would be considered a sport tourer?? Look when you buy an Fz1 its marketed as a naked R1, supersport whatever. Again Just because you put bags on somthing does not classify it as a touring motorcycle. You are right about one thing the fz1 is considered a supersport motorcycle putting bags on it makes it a supersport motorcycle with some bags on it and thats it!!! This thread was talking about how Yamaha markets the bike NOT how you market the Bike.. So again in your opinion if you load down a bike with bags and go touring it is a tourer. I think the Black and white fact here is its not considered a touring motorcycle according to yamaha and if you put bags on it and tour I would consider that a sport bike with a nice touring setup. Just my .02 cents

Agree with you on that one. Here in the states the super sport guys only want full fairing bikes with clip-ons. Anything else they wont even consider so it's a very limited market for the naked bikes. And as you pointed out we end up missing out on some great bikes (e.g. CB1000R).

I don't market any bikes... I am a Server/Storage Engineer... never sold a bike (commercially) in my life. :poke: ;)

IMHO, a spade is a spade. If a rider is touring on ANY bike that is set up to tour with, it's a tourer. I can't be any more specific than plain fact. Sorry. :icon_beer:

Also, the thread is about what could possibly be the new 2011 FZ1. There has been no mention of Yamaha marketing that I saw.

I'm not asking you, or any other member to agree OR disagree with me dude. Chill, ok? I'm stating my observations which are *just* that. Mine. I'm not trying to ram my opinion down any member's throat.

Again... to ME, it is black and white fact. If a sportbike is set up with touring apparatus, it IS a tourer. This has zero to do with marketing, classification etc... the mere fact that it is touring makes it so, maybe not in the classification or marketing sense, but tell that to the rider who is touring on it. I'm betting that rider says "Yes, I made it a touring bike but I can ride sport too!"

But I see where I went wrong. I try soooo hard to never use the word "you" when voicing my opinion but on occasion, it slips. I always try to write opinions objectively. I reserve "you" for when I am addressing another member. My bad!

Have a beer on me. :icon_beer:
