So a guy I ride with has an 03ish vfr 800. We went for ride today and swapped bikes for a few. Other than the complete lack of get up and go the vfr is an awesome bike. It felt mord ergo friendly and seemed lighter in the corners than the fz. I know my suspension isn't set up correctly but it was a huge difference. If the new 1200 wasn't such an ugly beast I would consider getting one of those.
 
They're great bikes and amazingly agile for something that's so unbelievably heavy. I really like V4s & I much prefer that VFR motor over the FZ1, it's just so sweet sounding. What did you think of the VTEC on that VFR?

I had an '03 with ABS and just sold it last September for that "complete lack of get up and go". Before it I was on a Gen 1 FZ1. I go so sick of downshifting to really get going in the mountains around here. Other than that it was a great bike and very utilitarian. I miss the hard bags, but now that I'm on a Gen II I'm happy again.

The VFR is like a hot woman that isn't too good between the sheets. The FZ1 is like a hot woman that is good in the bedroom, a good cook, good at cleaning, etc. I've always said the FZ1 doesn't do anything GREAT, but does everything GOOD.

I really thought the power curve on the vfr was much more linear than the fz. He still has the stock pipes so its really quiet.

Oh and I REALLY need to sync my fuel injection his v4 was much smoother at high revs than mine.

:bs:Not the VFR! Mine had a horrible snatch on/off throttle (and people think the Gen II fuel cut is bad) as well as the abrupt transition at 7K for VTEC. It took a PCIII to cure that on my VFR.

Honda is engineered very well, but damn do they cram a lot of shit in a small area. You either need dwarf hands or to remove 3-5 items to get what you want to work on. I definitely don't miss that.
 
VTEC transition on mine is smooth as silk. It is totally unobtrusive. Mine has had every single mod you can imaging though.

I love the harmonic sound when it kicks in.

I've ridden several VFRs and none exhibited the snatch you describe. All were very well fuelled. Odd. The VTEC transition was noticeable but not disruptive. Mind you, I've driven plenty of cars with valve lift like that so I guess I was already prepared for it

Have you ridden the VFR1200 yet? It's actually not that bad looking in person, but I do agree that Honda could have done a better job with the design. One thing they didn't forget was power this time around. It's a little heavy, but plenty of power on tap...

I haven't. Our only real bike dealer left is owned by a huge douche and deals with those Harvey Albertson things.

I reckon that's probably due to the power difference when compared to the FZ1.

The VFR800 is way down on power compared to an FZ1.

Now the VFR1200, that's another story. I don't mind the VFR1200 at all.

Yep, that was exactly what I was pointing out. :) 140+ HP compared to ~109HP (or whatever my VFR is with all the mods.) Still the VFR is everything I need it to be and I love it.

It's probably more than most people need to. Litre bikes spoil you for power that most of the time you never use.
I'd love to be able to trade off some top end for more low to mid range.

VFR is just one of the bikes on my to-own list. I love the idea and concept and they look killer in red, anniv ed, and dark grey colors... However, every time I go to look for one, they are just way overpriced...
