YZF Winter Spruce Up 2012

Glad I was able to get you back on the road buddy. And to think that I have been contemplating putting those forks up on eBay since they were just "spares". Guess you never know when you'll need stuff.

Well, next time I'm across the bridge I'll pass by and drop off the spare fork. It's perfect and has new 10wt oil installed. You could probably sell it easily for a few bucks. I polished up the leg and tube so it looks great.

Happy Easter everyone! I didn't get downstairs until 10am this morning. I immediately got started cleaning the front calipers before anything else.

After they were as clean as I could get them without having to remove them, I set up a kerosene bath for the chain. I took the tupperware I cut down from work and set it atop my oil catch pan. I laid the chain submerged in it. You could immediately see rust floating away from it. Tomorrow I'll go in and rotate it to the next section, and keep doing it until I make a complete revolution. Then I'll spray it down with a healthy dose of WD-40.

I then masked off the engine with cardboard and shot the now clean headers with black VHT Paint. The same stuff I used on the mid-pipe. Should be good from now on since this bike will NEVER see another drop of rain!

I got the first fork inserted into the triples and just snug it in place.

The second fork went in the same as the first.
IMG_4622_zps333f3703.jpg

I locked the forks about two inches above the top triple at first in order to tighten down the caps. Once they were tight, I lowered them to spec height and tightened and torqued all the pinch bolts.

The clip-ons were adjusted and tightened and the forks were done.

I cleaned the front spacer and speedo gear assembly and got ready for the wheel.
IMG_4626_zps8eddbc61.jpg

I made sure to get the "rear" front fender on first this time. The last time I did this backwards and had to remove the wheel again to get the bolts in. Live and learn!
IMG_4628_zpsbd041511.jpg

I greased up the front axle with some bearing grease.

Front wheel installed!
IMG_4630_zps1d8280b8.jpg

I sat and polished the fender bolts with scotch brite and installed the front fender.
IMG_4631_zpsd562399b.jpg

Once that was done I sat and polished the front caliper bolts and installed both front calipers.

She's half a roller again!!!

So I crossed another couple of items from my list and leaves me with just a few minor things which I'll button up next Saturday. Almost ready to ride her again!!

Nice progress you made today! Man I'm glad I had those forks :)

Thanks T, believe me, I'm glad you had those forks! The replacement cartridge is $246.00 dollars from Partshark. And thats if they even have it. I should be done by next weekend. I'm assuming that we have seen all the snow we're gonna see this year, thank God, so we should be riding soon! I hope you had a great Easter!

Great work. You'll be up on two in no time!

Rain isn't the problem. I think you got salted. And you know what to do now if caught in wet riding BEFORE you put her away. ;)

Keep it coming! "Lookin' right smaht!" as we say up heyah!

Waited for it to warm up a little before going down this morning to button up things. I really wanted to have her running today but still had a few things to do. I started out back with the rear caliper. After some scotch brite and brake parts cleaner, I had it as clean as it was gonna get without removing it entirely from the bike.

I cleaned up the dog bones and shock perch next.
IMG_4645_zpsa2a8d767.jpg

Once finished, I lubed up the rear axle and mounted the rear wheel. She's a roller again after four months!
IMG_4648_zps93885957.jpg

It was nice to see her on two wheels again!
IMG_4650_zps658fbc8b.jpg

I masked off the swingarm and sprayed the mid-pipe next to cover up the bare metal that was exposed after the cheapo coating job they did.
IMG_4652_zpse07183b4.jpg

I rolled her outside to get some sun and I proceeded to clean the garage floor to get ready for an oil change.
IMG_4653_zpsdfd7f97a.jpg

I checked the thermostat cover and it was dry yet under the upper hose it was wet with coolant so I gave the hose clamp a couple more turns and it seemed to stop leaking.
IMG_4654_zps675e8c9f.jpg

I gave the gas tank a fresh dose of Star-Tron and primed the floats. After three cycles of the key and some choke, she fired right up! She sounded good with the new plugs. I let her warm up to temp and then dumped the old oil.
IMG_4659_zps65213efa.jpg

I swapped out the old K&N with a fresh one from CycleGear.

IMG_4661_zps90b1cc60.jpg

I rolled her outside once again and installed new cotter pins on the torsion arm that holds the rear caliper and then installed the rear hugger.

I brought the cracked rear tail panel upstairs with me to redo the crack with a better epoxy I bought. It is rated at 3,200 PSI so it should hold better than what I used previously. Tomorrow I will hopefully have all the bodywork installed and maybe a quick video while I take my maiden voyage of 2013!

Here's some video of the start-up!

Awesome! Hope you can get out on her tomorrow. Michele and I will be taking ours out for a spring shake-down tomorrow. Looking GREAT!

Nice to see you got her back together. I may have some time tomorrow afternoon to play with the RZ. Maybe I'll try to do the steering head and wheel bearings. I'm still pretty far away from having a roller :(
