Ok can't bear to pay $300 for my 10,000km service (Basically an oil change). Ordered a new K&N 204 oil filter (after consulting their site) Had a look at my bike and it has a K&N 303 filter fitted from its 1,000km service. The 303 looks a little longer than the 204. Anybody know if this is the only difference?

Thought the 303 was for gen 1 fz's and the 204 is for 2nd gen. factory replacement should have been the kn 204. wouldn't take it back to where it got serviced last. From the specs it should work and the larger filter may be better but they should have asked you if they wasn't putting on the correct one.

Yea the 303 was used on the older Yamaha bikes, but fits the Gen II just fine. Since my '97 YZF1000 calls for a 303 I just buy those and used them on the FZ1 as well. No issues to report...

Yep just reinforces why I like to do my own work. I was a bit alarmed at first but really couldn't see that it would harm it.

Just because they will screw on doesn't mean they are the same. Did anyone bother to check to see what they bypass was reated at? A couple years ago I was reading a good article on oil filters and the most frequently neglected issue was what the bypass valve was rated at. Are you getting good filtration because the bypass is rated at what Yamaha designed the oil system to use or is the oil simply bypassing the filter because it is set too low? In many cases the bypass valve was set far too low and the regular pressure of the pump was opening the bypass valve and little oil was actually passing through the filtration material.

Exactly right, just because it fits does not mean it is suitable.

well, unfortunately, K&N doesn't list that on their site... it just says bypass: yes

apparently they did at some point and time, because I found several references to these numbers:

Oil Filters in Canada - Yamaha FZ6 Forums - International FZ6 Motorcycle Community Forum
For 204 the PSI relief valve is 14.5, but for 303 the PSI relief valve is 18.1.

ok, a current link that confirms those numbers:
