Okay I'm about ready to use my notebook for a skeet clay. The thing will run so slow that I have to revolt it multiple times.

I've run Reg Clean Pro, Kaspersky, and made sure all of the MS updates are done.

I've checked for unneeded aps and turned them off too. However they turn back on.

It's a 2.5 year old HP with a Centrina 2 with 6 gb of ram

Ideas, aside from a new laptop?

Have you gone into MSCONFIG yet and checked the STARTUP page to shut off all unecessary programs?? I know for sure that if you disable them from there they will not run on startup anymore. With 6Gigs of RAM you should be cruising with no problems. Try and run MALEWAREBYTES on FULL SCAN as some ADWARE can slow the machine down drastically.

I have an 18 mo old machine that is slow as well. I'm beginning to research what I actually need at start up to function.

HP as well, Envy 17.

You basically need only your anti-virus protection. Unless of course you have a Wireless Config Utility. I only have my Anti-virus starting up with windows and I have zero issues whatsoever and the machine boots up fast and flies through Windows. I'm running 8Gigs of Ram.

I have a 5 to 6 year old Dell Inspiron running two gigs of ram with Ubuntu. All I use for is cruising the net from the recliner and running bionic. But it doesn't crash or get viruses. Have Win7 on the desktop though and have no problems with that while I run bionic 24/7. Hope you figure out what's holding you back.

How much would a so-so Internet connection impact its performance?

Internet connection would only affect it while browsing and unless you're using a 56k modem it really shouldn't be that bad. Even DSL is ok for emails and reading something like this forum. You only really notice the lack of bandwidth when downloading big files (movies, songs, large pics, etc.).

Yeah Johnny I know. I bought my son a Mac Book Pro that is stunning, it works.

Billy I'll try the MSCONFIG thing and see what I find. It amazes me that DOS, in this day and age, actually has some barring on my computing in 2012...

I bought my first computer, a Mac LCII (for $3,200 in 1990 dollars btw...), so would NOT have to learn DOS. ugh...

Side note, I use Safari on my HP, and I have a 7 to 8 year old iMac 20, that is a stud. The problem is because it's a Motorola processor I can't stream Netflix, etc. With the newer Intel processors you can.

Try re-installing win7 after backup and wiping the drive. that has worked for me in the past. It's a pain in the ass, but it works.

Ugh, I know, I may have to. However this install isn't that old. This machine came with Vista, and a free upgrade to 7. I think I installed 7 about 18 months ago.

I went into MSCONFIG last night a zapped a few things I didn't recognize. Not much difference.

So the "System Idle Process" is at 50% of the CPU, and "svchost.exe" alternates with System Idle.

Any other ideas?

Yes Johnny, I know, buy a Mac...
