Ticking sound at 2500 RPM

So my 2001 FZ1 has 22k miles. Hasnt had valves adjusted.

All of a sudden yesterday, I noticed a tick. Now it happens at 2500 fairly loudy, and mostly upon engine deceleration. I noticed the carb boots are worn and dry cracked, but I dont think that would cause this tick? It def. sounds more like a rubbery thwomp twomp than a tick tick tick. I believe I can hear my lifters seperately from this noise.

So: Any clues? I listened pretty intently and it sounds like its right where the carbs are. I can even feel it it I hold my hand at the top of the carbs. Now could it be sucking in air through the boots?

Just noticed the bike doesn't do this when cold. Also, is there a link to a how-to on the EXUP? I was thinking maybe the oil is too thin. Running 5w40 syn.
