Hello all,

I'm thinking of buying an 02 FZ1 that is in great shape. Only thing that concerns me is the mileage (78,000). The owner took great care of it. He showed me all the maintenance records, oil was changed every 3k, valves checked/adjusted every 26k, chain/sprocket and tires when needed. It does not burn any oil, and it still goes like a bat out of hell (I took it for a test ride). I've read that in many cases FZ1s will go for more than 100,000 miles without issues. The price is definately right on the bike, i'd like to hear what fz1 owners have to say on the mileage before I go for it. Any opinions greatly appreciated

Thanks

Mitch

I'm not at all worried about the mileage, especially if he did his last valve service recently. 78K is nothing if well maintained. The price however should reflect the mileage. I'd be curious as to how much the seller is asking. He technically should have done 3 Valve Services by now. If only two, it is due now, and thats a few hundred bucks.

As Billy said, the mileage is meaningless as long as it has been well-maintained. I owned a 2003 FZ1 that I sold with 60,000 miles. It had long service records from the original owner (the seller's father) but was dirty and poorly maintained when it was passed to the seller. I picked it up for $2600 CAD quite easily and our bike prices are largely inflated compared to our neighbours in the south.

What's the asking price? $2500 would be my absolute maximum unless the bike was showroom fresh or something like that.

You're only a hop, skip & jump from me in Vancouver, BC! :)

Wow and I thought Winnipeg was bargin central, I have an 01 in mint shape with 30,000 miles and would not even consider a nickle less than 4 grand. I have seen many first Gen's here sell in the past couple of years all over 4 G's. Think about it if the bike is maintaned and up to date the parts alone add up.
Tires $ 400 (buying USA if bought locally $ 600), Chain and Sprocket $ 200, Valve set $ 400 (dealer price here).
Guess it all depends as we all have different opinions on what is good shape, for me it is a bike that needs nothing, get on and ride.

A month ago I bought a 2001 FZ1 with 66k on it for $1200... then sold off one of the two seats that came with it, bringing my actual purchase price to $925. Helluva deal, esp considering it already had an Ivan's jet kit, full Traxxion dynamics suspension, and SW Motec rear rack. It's been dropped a few times and the fairing is cracked, the rest of it is pretty well scratched up, but it runs great. Oh it needed tires too. But still I consider it a helluva deal.

Thanks for the info everyone. Sounds like the mileage isn't as much of a worry as I thought. The bike may very well be in my garage tonight:)

I got it, talked it down to $2400. I really like the bike. Runs amazing for having that many miles on it. Took it out for most of the day yesterday, carved up some twisties then achieved undisclosed high speeds on freeway onramps :D

Well this makes me feel better about my purchase. Mine had 40,000 miles on it which had me a little concerned. But it was super clean and ran great so I went for it. I'm glad I did because I love it. I was talking to a guy the other day at the drag races and he said he knows a guy that has one with 200,000 miles. That seems a little unrealistic to me but who knows.

Here's someone with 200,000 on their fz1, impressive http://www.998cc.org/forum/fz1-general-discussion/13930-200-000-mile-club.html

I removed the fuel tank and discovered that the carb boots (going from carb to engine) are dried out and cracked:mad: , looks like those will be a pain in the a$$ to replace too. Wish I noticed that before probably could have talked down price more. I've put a a couple hundered miles on it and haven't noticed any other issues though. Gonna change the oil today for good measure.

That's normal. The boots are pretty thick so if they're only damaged on the surface, you have nothing to worry about. :)

If they were leaking, you would probably notice

the carb boots are cracked pretty good, but I guess you're right if they were cracked all the way through it would idle/run poorly. I think the previous owner painted the bar ends, rad guards and grab handles blue, looks good though

I would change them if they are cracked. While I was waiting for my new ones to arrive I coated the cracks with Silicone on mine to be on the safe side as if they crack right though it will create a lean condition. NOT good.
Cannot remember what I paid for them but labour on the work was $ 150.00
