Suspension Clicker Settings

So I took the bike to a suspension shop to have the preload and clickers adjusted a couple weeks ago. Since I've gained weight (240 lbs) the preload is maxed out front and rear...really surprised me!

The shop got the rear feeling quite good but the front just didn't seem to jive with the rear. They had it set 10 clicks out from full hard on compression, and 15 clicks out for rebound. I put it back to 5 clicks out (OEM setting) for compression and found that 3 clicks out (from full hard) for rebound felt better. This is a Gen II to clarify.

What do most folks here set theirs at? Both OEM and the suspension shop set rebound softer than compression but it feels better (to me) to have it the other way. Am I just nuts?

It kind of amazes me that any bike can be made with a pillion seat and not even be capable of properly adjusting for 2-up riding. Well, that is of course unless your passenger and you total up to no more than 225. ;)

If it were properly designed for 2-up it would be capable of suspending 1 big guy.

I agree and that's why I'm surprised. However, Yamaha is probably looking at the typical customer and that's probably not my fat a^%. :D

I am losing weight (gained it due to an illness) but it takes a while. I'm usually around 220lbs although that's not much different. What kind of springs & weight of fork oil would I use? I hate to do that since the bike seems to be riding 'ok' at the settings I have right now. I just know it could be better.

When I got my Fz1 2 years ago I was at about 240. Right at 212 now and it was the best thing I ever did for performance! ;) Good luck in your weight loss. We will all root for ya!

I haven't fine tuned the other settings, but I'm maxed on preload and I know that's still not enough - I'm rolling 280 alone.

there are no difference among the different brands of springs available in the market. the only difference is either they are linear or progressive springs.

best if you go to a suspension specialist to work out the changes required. ;)

You sure your suspension settings are right??

I am around 225 without gear. I regularly ride with a pillion.

I have an 06.

I have the front preload set with 3 rings showing. Compression is set at 12 clicks and rebound at 14. The rear preload is set at position 3 for one up riding with about 8 clicks of rebound. I increase the preload to positions 5,6 or 7 depending on the weight of the pillion and luggage.

The suspension performs adequately for touring and I have done 40,000 kms with this set up.

When I do a track day or some fast one up riding, I set the front clicks to 8 on compression and 10 on rebound and change the back to 6 clicks of rebound.

I think there is a real misconception about setting suspensions to hard for a big guy to make them work. I have changed the settings over and over and have found these to be the best for how I ride and the roads we ride on over here. The 06 also had a stiffer rear spring than the later models but the forks are the same (I think).

Many thanks for your post! Have you measured sag with your preload settings?
