Well fuck me. I go and put on the 17T sprocket and now the bike wants to surge. If I am very light on the throttle, almost non existent throttle It bucks me around and then I can actually see the tach jumping about 200 RPM. It loves doing it down hill. Slight down grade is where its most prevalent.

I have a 500 mile trip next weekend and I am not dealing with this shit on it.

So what fixes this? My fuel line is not stock, and I dont have a PC3 or anything. Other than a slip on its basically stock.

Thanks!

I hate to say it but this is the problem I have with the SpeedoDRD on my stock gearing. Something about this correction field isn't playing well with the ECU. To verify, reset the SpeedoDRD to factory and try a run... if it clears, it's the culprit.

I was reading about the Speedo DRD causing surging?

I don't recall my bike acting funny when I had the DRD cleared but now that I have a correction percentage in there its being weird. I am running -7.1% on there right now.

I can't remember what percent I was at when I was running the 16T.

Tomorrow I will clear it and see what happens. Then I will try like 6.9 or 7.5 or something close but not exact to what it is. Pisses me off as 7.1 is SPOT ON all the time all the way to 100.

I hate this shit. Nothing ever goes right, nothing ever works right, and everything you buy to make an improvement only causes more problems. FML

Theres alot to be said about leaving a bike stock, and changing your riding style to suit.I`ve been down that road before and don`t intend to do it again anytime soon

But that takes all the fun out of it! But I agree with your basic premise, a bike like an FZ1 is pretty well sorted out as it comes from the factory and for the overwhelming percentage of owners it is fine the way it is. But some people get enjoyment out of modding things, and their bike is no different. But just like cars, a bike is now a complicated electronic interaction between various systems, play with one and it affects another one. I'd rather ride vs troubleshooting glitches of a modification. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Each to his own.

No arguement from me,I understand to well why people do mod`s,I just found the on going problems outway the fun,I have old bikes to play with, I like to keep this one as trouble free as possible

No issue here with 1000's of miles on a heavily modded bike. Speedo DRD too. (it will be interesting to see if it is the culprit for Geno)

Don't agree that the FZ1 is well sorted out from the factory. Incredibly restrictive intake and exhaust, poor fueling, snatchy throttle, junk rear shock, hard seat etc etc. Great basic platform however, that transforms into wonderful all arounder with some elbow grease and some $.

Of course your opinion may vary . . .

So after about 200 miles today, and changing the SpeedoDRD I have come out with something that works.

First off, the bike was surging due to the Speedo DRD. At -7.1% it was a shit show. So I then backed it off to nothing, and it was fine. Then ran it at -6.8% and it was a shit show. So I then tried -4.9% and it was fine. Moved it to -5.5% and there was no surging but almost felt like it kinda wanted too, so now its at -5.2% and its solid. Also, it is either dead on or 1mph fast so that is fine with me. I can deal with it perfectly fine with where it is now. I am just happy it was something dumb and not some BS that other people go through with the surging on these beasts.

In about 20 miles I will hit 13K. Woot! 530 mile trip planned for this weekend so that works!

Now I see it... :D

I'll have to toy with mine and see where the settings make a difference. It's still strange that there is interference only at certain settings, but I've heard of this on many bikes. So, I'm going to try the -5.2% and see if I have any troubles. I'd rather go low than too high and be speeding ALL the time! :D

That is why I went lower. I am OK with it being 1 or 2 MPH higher than I am going. Better than the 5-6mph higher it is from the factory.

The % really is not a huge difference. Going off their calculators, 1.6% is only 1mph on the speedo, so there IS some room to play. That's why I am content at the -5.2% as it is not far off even though you would think being almost 2% from what is perfect would be a lot it really is not.

Dunno if it was your -05.2% recommendation or a combo of that and the PC V, but that setting has zero ill effects on my bike. Thanks!!!

Ok, we need to be a bit detail oriented here (I am OCD about such things). What gears does it happen? Stock ECU restricts the HP in the 1st 3 gears and more than likely bases its calculations on speed too. We know the stock error is right at 5.2% if you go on healtech site and I have verified this too. Maybe that is why -5.2 max works for you? Beyond that ECU goes bonkers??

It is only the 6-7 ish range that messes things up. When I had the 16T in there I was somewhere in the -12% range and it never gave me a problem.

Any gear, holding steady around 4K RPM and usually on a slight downhill with VERY little but still there throttle input.
