Scorpion + Givi side cases: a bit of an issue

So some of you may remember my Delkevic exhaust exploded about a month ago. I replaced it with Scorpion, which I like very much. Lifetime warranty, much higher quality (looks-wise) and no need to ever repack (at least according to documentation).

Here's the issue: I also have Givi V35 side cases. Delkevic had an old-style looking *spout* at the end of the can, which directed the exhaust straight back. Scorpion has no spout and exhaust follows natural upward curve of the can.. which happens to be pointing directly at the underside of the side case.

On longer rides, the case bottom gets very hot. Even the bottom on the inside gets hot to the point where it's too hot to touch.. heats up whatever I have in the case quite a bit too.

I slapped on a piece of heat shield sheet on the underside, but it's not helping all that much. Can try adding same sheet on the inside too, but I doubt it'll help.

Can you think of any solution to this issue, short of not using side cases / selling my motorcycle / moving to North Pole?

Thin gauge aluminum is easy to work with. If you were to make a piece that was bent to allow an air gap, even 1/4 inch and mount it over top of the heat shield it should make a big difference. The air gap is the important thing on a heat shield.

Hmm.. So if I cut a piece of aluminum to fit on the underside of the case and maybe attach it with double sided tape, think that'll do the trick?

Or do the plate AND add the heat shield sheet to it and stick it to the bottom of the case?

You could put a brisket in there with some veggies and have a nice roast when you get home. :poke:

Have you tried to see if you can get a tailpipe extension for the can?

LOL @ brisket! Talk about functional!
Extension won't work. End of can currently sits 1/2" away from case. Any extension of the mid-pipe will drive the can up into the case. Good thought though!

Wondering now if this pipe would work better for me

It would still be pointing at the case, but the end of tip would be at least 3" away from the case.

That pipe looks pretty sweet. this one looks like it might work

Yeah, I can always go with another shorty.. heck, Delkevic makes one! (how funny would it be if I got another one to blow up?!)

But I *think* I learned my lesson and want to stick with reputable brands. I fully trust LeoVince, IF I decide to go that route.

I did send a note to Scorp (thanks for the idea, Dustin!).. let's see if they have any ideas.

If push comes to shove, I could probably be convinced to take the Givi bags off your hands. :justkidding: I'd trade for my Dryspec bags!

LOL.. so kind of you!! I LOVE those cases and I can't give them up, unless I get another bike (hoping to pick up FJR one day, but not in immediate future).

Got a reply from Scorpion:

Hi Eric,

The only thing we would suggest would be to put some heat reflective material on the underside of the case but it sounds like you have already done this.

There’s not a lot else you can do other than alter the outlet position of the exhaust.

Regards

Seriously considering trying Leo GP exhaust :banghead:

Lee's idea of a heat shield is ideal. Cut, shape, fit and put 4 small stand-offs between it and the case. As Lee said, having the air gap is key. I'd worry about double-sided tape with the heat though. Maybe go with something more permanent? It wild mean drilling some holes in the case but it can be made to look very professional. ;)

Yeah, this is the bit I was hoping to avoid. I know I'll eventually end up selling them, and drilling one will really not help :(

Also, there's not that much space under there to space anything out.

Do you think swapping the pipe to LV GP would help or would it make it worse?! Looks like the tip of LV will be ~4" away from the case, but it will be pointing toward it :dontknow:

Take a look

Pictures help

Two things after seeing the pictures. Put another layer over the existing shield and make it one piece front to back. The dual layer might offer enough. The other thing is try making a small aluminum or stainless tab to shift the pipe hanger down slightly (if the pipe has enough play at the joints to allow a slightly lower angle. All you would need is to shift the tip of the pipe 1/2 an inch and I doubt you would have any real issue anymore.

The tab would have 2 holes in in just far enough apart to allow the existing hanger bolt and another bolt (and washer) to sit side by side. In effect extending the end can hanger tab. The other option is to see if Scorpion could supply a hanger that was longer at the tab end. It would not need much at the hanger to shift the end by 1/2 an inch.

Just a thought, rather than dropping hundreds on a new can.

All excellent ideas! Going to give that a try shortly.

Wish I had better tools for metal work, but it'll do (at least for now).

Bought me about 3/4" extra clearance. Let's see if this will be enough.
