So, I am going to test ride a new '13 super tenere on Tuesday. There is a dealer close by that is discounting the 13's a good bit to make room for the 14's. I will wait till after the ride to make my final decision, but feel like I'm leaning towards the big s10. I love my gen1 and have it exactly how I want it but feel that the s10 would be nice for riding on different surfaces and would be much more comfortable on longer trips either solo or two up. I would love to hear some opinions, suggestions or insights into this possible decision?

All I can say is I really look forward to your ride report.

Best of luck with the deal. I have no doubt that Super Ten is a fantastic long distance machine!

Will definitely give a ride report. I should be able to get some back roads mixed with freeway so I should get a good feel for the bike. The only real bad characteristic I have heard of is excessive buffeting from the windshield, but being only 5'10" and coming from the fz with a short windshield I don't think that will be an issue.

I have heard that about the flash as well. I am curious as to how much the bike will stumble down low in the first 3 gears, as this seems to be a problem without the reflash. I know it won't have the of the fz, just need to see if it makes me smile as much?

I've demo'd S10 twice (well.. once the 13 and once the 14.. no real difference to speak of).

I've ridden it in stock form, so no idea how reflash affects it, but yes.. fueling is not very good on the stocker. Definitely stuttering at lower RPMs. Give it a very quick blip and the RPMs never come up.. it does the opposite.. almost feels like it cuts out and then RPMs come back to idle.

Besides that, at 5'10" I found buffeting to be quite bad. I'd have to look into aftermarket screen or come up with a mod for stock one, to ride this bike.

The real deal killer for me though: it just doesn't ride all that great on the road. It's a couch.. soft and cushy. This makes sense for something that can handle offroading, but if 99% of my riding was to be on road, this bike would not be on my list.

Power may be another point which reflash addressed, but in stock form, it felt anything, but strong with quite a bit of unpleasant vibration at certain RPMs.

I test road the new V-strom 1000 (the one with the beak), the same day and pretty much everything about that bike felt better to me.
On the fly adjustable screen with far less buffeting.
Far less vibration.
Significantly wider power band with much better fueling.
Not nearly as couch-like.. very road-worthy, though I imagine it's not nearly as capable offroad.

Of course, all of the above is just my opinion and you may have a completely different perspective on this.

Looking forward to reading how your test ride goes!

Thanks for the info Erci, you made some very good observations. I have been lurking over at the adv forum and it seems most s10 owners don't fall in love with the bike until they have logged a few thousand miles, it seems it gets better with age, much like myself! At least that is what I tell the wife. I am very curious to ride and see if it will make me want to part with the beloved gen1.

If possible, try to test ride the V-strom after you ride S10. Besides the looks (I'm definitely not a fan of that beak), I did immediately fall in love with that bike.

I did see a new vstrom cruising down the road a couple weeks ago, I thought it looked pretty good. With that beak it took me a minute to figure out what it was.

Apparently yamaha has a $500 trade up allowance on the s10 and their price is $11,499. Book value on my gen1 is $2100 so out the door should be $9000. With a $500 flash the bike should be up to par with the '14 and I am not wanting the ESA so the $14,??? Sticker seems a bit much. Right now tho my brain is fighting my wallet. I do love my gen1 and will have to be genuinely impressed to trade up for the s10.
