Repair on swing arm

Hello all,

Ive been biking for a few years now but new to the FZ1 this year. Picked mind up a few weeks back now and noticed today (after a good clean that made it more obvious) that it looks as though the swing arm has been repaired. (See image)
Was wondering if anyone on hear would be able to help with ideas as to how this damage could have came about, if any of you have came across it before and most importantly if you’d think it’s safe to ride.

Chain needs help, looks terrible. Looks like a chain had been thrown and took a chunk out of the aluminum. Check wheel alignment. Do not see any reason it wouldn't be rideable. Have a machinist check with penetant dye for cracks any suspect areas on the bike to be sure.
