Anyone know if the lower section of an 2010 fork will fit into the upper section of an '06 front fork. Are the tubes the same size?

Well both fork tubes are 43mm in diameter, but I don't know if the overall length of them is the same.

Thanks for that, I will try & get to the shop with a tape. I was thinking to buy '10 R1 lower tubes, fit them to my forks, fit the radial calipers & a cartridge then I'd be good to go, but depends on how the costs work out.
