Which is a better option to completely replace the fz forks with R1 forks or should I swap springs out and perhaps run a different fork oil?

Yeah Ohlins is not in the budget, and likely not a penske either.R1 by a mile, or 2, or 3, or 4, well you get the picture.
Or... just go Ohlins, if you plan to keep the bike.
R1 forks, and the accompanying R1 brakes are perhaps the best bang for the buck. They really transform the bike.
Heck, you could sell the FZ1 legs to the FZ8 jokers. They think the FZ1 suspension is the bomb. You might even net to zero. :sinister:
I found the best three mods on the FZ1 to be; Penske shock, R1 Forks/Brakes, Flash. Okay, a real saddle. So four. Totally different bike.
I fitted '08 R1 forks, 6 pot radial brakes and radial M/C to my GenII.
It all bolts straight in/on.
Was this using the FZ1 axle, wheel and rotors?
I cannot compare but I did buy the springs and heavier oil... This method is a band-aid fix for stability and brake-dive and works OK but I have to believe the R1 forks are a crap-ton better. If you can swing it, go with the R1 setup.
Speaking of which, for the Gen II, is there a chart showing what year R1 forks bolt on? What year R1 setup requires more than just bolt-on?
I was thinking of getting progressive rate springs, different valves and a total overhaul. I get aftermarket stuff for a pretty outstanding rate..
You'll need a R1 axle and 4 caliper spacers so they fit the rotors but everything else fits.
Our rebound fork isn't all that bad. The dampening fork is what blows. Traxxion Dynamics has a way to reverse the rebound valve, shim the stack and mount it for dampening which works quite well I'm told. I have no idea what that costs but they can also put in the progressive springs too.
Or use 310mm R1 rotors. Then there's no need for spacers and they are cheap on Ebay.

Not in Europe they're not, its why I took the spacer route...
I hear ya. They're not cheap in Australia either, that's why I bought everything from EBay.com in the USA.
