Quick dumb question: Rim Tape stock or no?

The red rim tape that I see on a lot of clean Gen II Black FZ1s (not all black I suppose but it is the most popular) - is it stock?

If not, do you guys put your own on or have any tips for not crinkling? What about the rear tire, putting it on mounted is probably a pain because of the reduced angles you have to work your arms around (due to sprocket, disk and swing arm)

Thanks ^.^

Some come with it stock (mine did) and some don't. You can buy it in 4 quarter sections so it is easier to install, using soapy water or window spray to wet the rim before install also makes the job a lot easier.

I do not believe it was stock. The 2007?? (ERCI) model Fz1 that was black had red accents on the tank and a lot of people added red rim tape. I have a 2009 that was the gray and black with gold rims (no rim tape).

I've done it on my previous bike and found it easiest to put it on between 9 o clock and 6 o clock positions applying anticlockwise working from 9 to 6. Then roll the bike backward until the bit youve just done is at 9 o clock and repeat. Stick the right end of the sticker onto a spoke somewhere while applying from the left. If you don't stick the loose end onto something clean, it'll flop over and potentially pick up dirt off the ground. Stick it to the rim about two inches at a time and smooth it in the direction youre applying it before working along to the next bit.

I'm right handed btw, & I always used pre-curved rim tape where it's four sections for each side of each wheel.

Doing the chain side of the back wheel is the hardest bit but its not too bad.

You can get thinner and thicker rim tape (width), I think the thinner looks best, I think the FZ1 stock painted on red stripe is about 8mm wide. Wouldnt want it any thicker than that I dont think. 6mm-8mm width is the sweet spot from memory

I dunno how dramatic you are actually being about rotational weight.. ^^

I would rather it be painted though, instead of standing close by and being able to see the that it is tape on the wheel, especially having four sections. I know someone who could powder-coat them but that seems like a waste of good money.

I will check out he four section tape I suppose and see how installation goes after a nice bath and alcohol wipe on the rims.

Thanks guy

But paint is permanent.....if you don't like it you are stuck. If you don't like the tape, just pull it off.
