Popping Sound

Last night as I rode 2 up on my '01 FZ1 I started hearing a popping sound that reminded me of a chain that was adjusted too tight but it would only make the noise with the clutch engaged. When I'd coast in neutral or with clutch disengaged; no noise. Any suggestions or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Tight spot in chain that only makes the sound under load, happened to me once, changed from chain lube to WD40 no problems for the last 80,000 Klicks
