You buy a header... you give up low-end power... but have slight gains in top end.

Yea, you're right about that! And if you do most of your riding on the street then you will probably regret getting rid of the EXUP because you'll miss that low and mid-range torque.
 
It felt like I had another bike when I finally serviced my exup. Low end was back and everything felt a lot smoother from idle to cruising speed. I was very happy and now that I know how to do it, I won't wait so long for the next service.

It seems to me that system works perfectly.
