Many of you know about the death on August 3rd, of Dwight "Ike " Woodard.
And many know about the petition to try and get Big trucks banned or restricted on the Dragon. But, some of you may not know...or was going to sign the IKE petition....I'm posting just as a reminder. Please consider. There have only been 3700 or so signings. Will take a minimum of 5000 to even have it be heard. Thank You...RIP Ike.

It shocks me that there is only that many names so far. I signed this petition at least 2 weeks or more ago, if I remember correctly. As many people who frequent the Dragon, you'd think there would be over 5,000 names on the petition by now. It literally takes less than a minute of your time to do it online. Hopefully they get all the names and somewhere in the future the powers that be will come to their senses and keep commercial traffic off the dragon. Those big rigs who claim they are saving time is nonsense. By the time it takes you to negotiate 318 turns, you would have been to your destination had you gone the other way.

Yes Billy, I thought the same thing about number of sigs. In this day and age though, folks don't really want to take the time for something such as this. Wish there was a way that you could just do one click signing. I'm trying to bring more awareness to this, have even flooded my Facebook page with the link. Thanks to all that help. I've yet to ride the "Dragon" and now not sure I want to....maybe take a backseat on my bucket list.

I made signature 3,870. More people need to get involved in this. It's a shame that it takes a death to prompt a law of this nature. :frown:

That's what I say. It's the same here with dangerous intersections. It takes some poor little school kid to be killed crossing the street before they put a stop sign or traffic light. I've been here on this block since 1980 and the Avenue that crosses my street ran 7 blocks without so much as a stop sign. After 31 years of accidents and fatalities, they finally put up stop signs at every corner the entire length. How many people had to suffer until that happened? How much could a friggin stop sign cost?!

Thank You.

I'm not sure that this petition will do anything, but it might raise awareness, and come to notice that something is done. Even if it required trucks of a certain length to have certain hours, and /or escorts the same as a "wide load" has to have today, even on the interstate. And,I'm also not sure if a 5000 or even 10,000 signature petition will have an effect. I do know this, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease" as they say. If enough people sign this and make awareness, then this problem could be solved, no matter how it's (Law) is written or enforced. Sometimes, I say to myself, "What's the use?"....but this is something that I feel I can help support, and all it cost me is a little time...and a few prayers. Stay Safe out there...

Sorry but I can't get behind an outright ban. Yes more and better signage, with plenty of opportunity to turn around is in order. Banning seems to be something that we get pretty uptight about when it's done against bikes. The death is most deffinately a tragedy. But there are times when the road does need to be used by the trucks. I know that there are alternate routes, but this is a mountain area. At times other routes may be closed for a number of reasons. I have never taken a truck down that road, but I have driven on many that are far worse. This is just a case of everyone, on both sides of the situation, needing to be HYPER aware of the conditions and slow way the heck down. I know my opinion will not sit well with some people, but it is just my opinion. Legistlation is not always, and quite rarely, the solution to a problem.

If there is not a out right ban the minimum needs to be a escort. Either police or contracted. This is not a rode for a semi. Bikers are not the only one in harms way. There are plenty of other ways around.

Duly noted! We here in NY have plenty of "non-commercial" roads, and not even because of twists and turns. That route, in my opinion, is no place for a tractor trailer in the first place. Maybe many years ago when semi's were way shorter but it's nearly impossible for a 48' foot or more trailer to safely negotiate the turns on 129. I know for sure that if your in a car or bike and you cross that yellow line and are caught, you getting a ticket. A huge trailer spends most of it's time there across the double yellow. To me that imposes a severe threat to anyone in the oncoming lane whether they are past the speed limit or not. I have seen videos where truck have taken bikes off the side of the road and not even stopped! I respect the work and skill of all truck drivers. It's not something I would even attempt to do, but if I was a professional driver, there is no way I would want to hassle through a lousy 11 miles in the first place. I'd rather go around and be on a safer road for me, my cargo, and others sharing the road with me. :D

I have to agree with this, so I wouldn't sign the petition. First of all, it is a public road, not an exclusive motorcycle playground. If these rig drivers decide they can save time by driving it, so be it. It's their job to decide.

Second, you can ride the gap at a speed that will give you plenty of margin to avoid a run-in with a truck. You will be going pretty slow, but that's a choice. I tend to ride it at a blistering pace on a sport bike. I understand the risks. I am not willing to deny someone else the use of the road to reduce those risks.

I do like the idea of a lead escort. In the many times I have been to the gap, this usually happens naturally. Someone will pick up the escort duty. But not always.

My two cents.

After I watched a couple of the videos that showed how inadequate the road was for passage of semi-trailer traffic I have to agree that long commercial vehicles and regular cars and other personal modes of transportation should not be on this route at the same time. I've never driven Deal's Gap but I've read plenty about it and actually I'm surprised that there hasn't already been restrictions put on this route. We have a route much like Deal's Gap in our area (The Tunnel of the Trees, M-119) and although it also is not restricted because there are a lot of residential areas on the route, you almost never see commercial trailer traffic because it would be a PIA to navigate. I signed because I think it's only logical to limit those vehicles that obviously present
a danger to other traffic.
