Ah, finally out of traffic and onto the back-roads when all of a sudden...

I got around him within a few seconds of taking the picture. I ride those roads every day and know what's around the corners. That was a BAD spot to pass him. Usually when you see one of those trucks you can expect to see a convoy of those trucks. No point in passing on a double yellow with a blind turn just ahead followed by a 4-way-intersection just after the turn. Not to mention I just had a call from my lawyer this morning letting me know how my traffic ticket hearing went in court yesterday afternoon. Trying to "play nice" until the smoke all clears. It's one thing to do 7-8 over the 55 limit on the back-roads. It's another to pass on the double yellow in that spot. :retard:

This was about 2 miles from my house this week.

It is certainly not a safe spot to even THINK about passing...relatively short uphill, and no chance of seeing anything until you crest the hill. This man was too impatient to wait a quarter of a mile, where he would have had a passing zone (not 'legal' but you can see far ahead). I feel bad, but at the same time I can't believe that someone would risk a pass in a situation like that.

I love the hill that this happened. Fun crest where (if the road has been scoped out for the anti-fun boys) the hill tops out and you kinda get the suspension unweighted momentarily. But, not to pass someone.

Saying this, I have passed on double-yellow, and will continue to do so. But I always will do it when I would consider it safe to, and have the ability to check far enough ahead to get around someone.

That's just common sense. I find, where I ride, passing zones, corner speeds, etc... are set up for transport trucks. I can (obviously) safely pass where a fully loaded log truck can't. I should point out that, in Ontario, passing on a double yellow is not an automatic violation.
Most law enforcement around here still have a measure of common sense in this respect. Most riders do, too. Because there are a lot of safe places to pass on a bike that aren't dotted lines, it's up to the rider to use good judgement and make sure they can see as far as they need to. Every time someone abandons common sense and gets themself or someone else killed by making a reckless choice, it tightens things down further and allows the rest of us less opportunity to use judgement. It makes the police less inclined to trust our judgement.
A motorcycle is an entirely different experience to a car. Because we are the minority, the rules often don't suit our situation. Sometimes, the police will turn a blind eye to this, knowing the situation. Ride safely, and use good judgemet, and we might continue to enjoy this privellege. Ride like a moron and we all lose. And on the days when you're unlucky enough to meet Jonny Law who is 100% by the book, no ifs, ands, or buts, well, that's motorcycles...
