New bike for Christmas?

I have only had dual bike ownership a couple of times. My criteria is always the same. If I have a bike that is satisfying, reliable and multipurpose, I go looking for something that will make me cry when I put it to bed, and keep me up most ot the night thinking about my next ride. I do love a bike that makes me want to ride it AND look at it. My Gen 1 is the closest to the perfect all-rounder I've ever owned. If I could have a second bike it would be a bevel-drive Desmo Duck, a Laverda, a Norton or a Lemans III. I could also make do with a nice vintage BSA or Trumpet. A hot-rod Sportster,,,ah, yes, to sleep, perchance to dream.

OP - Get the bike that makes it hard to walk when looking at, and makes you feel alive when you ride. When you do, there will be no regrets.

But of your 2 narrowed down choices my vote goes to the Z1000.

I'll be pulling the trigger on a 2012 Ninja 1000 ABS with 650 miles tomorrow as long as it is everything the owner says it is (perfect). $7400 sound like a killer deal?

depending on how it was broke in, the first 1000 miles are pretty important.

I know some new left over stock 2012 FZ1 go for about $8000 around here so 7400 sounds fair

That sounds like a killer deal and its a good time of the year to buy toys.

Depends.... some dealers will cut out setup/freight.

And (depending where you live) your gonna pay tax either way.

I got the R1 for 10,750 + tax and license fee. No setup/freight, so same as if I bought it private for 10,750.
 
First... Your wife is a total winner!

After that ... Man! What a tough bunch of choices. A problem to envy!

The final.. The Ninja - my opinion - outclasses the Z1000 - though they are nearly the same motorcycle. The fairing and windshield not only help, but look great! Personally, I like a fairing and windshield "cockpit". Something psychological, I'm sure, but that kind of setup makes me "feel good".

So here's the deal on the Ninja 1000. My "buddy" who often wheels and deals bikes negotiated the price on the bike down from $9,200 to $7,200. He was going to pick it up for $7,200 and sell it to me for $7,400 (he makes $200 for making the deal). I show up to look at the bike yesterday and he says $8,000. He said why should I sell it to you for so cheap, I can make more money on it. I said because we made a deal and we're friends. He said were not that good of friends. I got pissed and went home. Mind you this is a "friend" who had cancer 2 years ago and while he was recovering from surgery I went to his house everyday and made him breakfast, swept his floor, did his dishes and hung out for a few hours before I went to work in the evenings. I'm a little ticked off!

Wow, it is amazing how ungrateful people are how they don't realize the gravity of what people do for them in the time of their need. If he didn't realize this when he was down cancer, he never will. He is clearly not your friend ... move on ..
 
I am. I will be writing this one off and moving on.
I've decided not to get a new bike and will be sticking to my FZ1. I just hope the Ole lady doesn't try to surprise me with a bike for Christmas (I've told her not to as I know she won't get a good deal). I'm just going to update the suspension and get a few track days.
 
Wow sorry to here about your friend Martin some people place no value on friendship. The R1 shock and Eddies seat made a big difference on my bike.
