Master Cylinder

I spotted another one but it doesn't have a lever or reservoir for $166 (incl post), but then a new reservoir is $46, levers start at $40 a pair (but may need 2 pairs to get the same on both sides - clutch FZ1, brake 05 R1)...
So thats at least $280, then add another $100 at least for the braided brake lines... Hmmm is it worth it?

If thats the case I should just buy the whole setup with the 6 piston callipers thats on ebay for $199us... postage would be about $50-60....
Next question will the R1 6 piston bolt onto the FZ1 struts?

No, the mounts are different.

The easiest way is to run 07/08 R1 forks but then you would also need R1 rotors too.

The bike will turn in much easier and the forks have more adjustment than FZ1 forks.

Its a win, win really :)

Ah well, I'll just keep looking for the right deal on a used MC with lever and reservoir (and get braided HEL lines when I do it) and put that on some time in the future...

I just spotted the Brembo RCS19 at www.carpimoto.com for €214 ($266AUD) and postage is cheap for this item worldwide!
Hmmm, just waiting for them to tell me if it suits the FZ1...

I wouldn't waste my money scotty.
As your bike is only for road riding, there is no need for a Brembo MC.
The stock MC works well with the stock FZ1 brakes.
If you were upgrading to radial brakes like on the 05+ R6 or 04+ R1 then it could be a good idea.
Personally I would but a set of Vesrah RJL brake pads for your FZ1, they are awesome brake pads which when combined with steel braided lines, will give you much better stopping power.

Ah ok. Well if I can find an R6 or R1 MC (with the lever and reservoir attached) from the wreckers back home for around $150 then I'll do it. But if I have to buy them all separately then it adds up to the same price as a new Brembo RCS19, and i'd rather the new brembo unit over second hand parts if I have to fork out the same money.

I have a question as well. I now have HEL Lines on my GenI with EBC Pads and stock calipers. So can I assume that using an R1/R6 Master Cylinder would be an improvement over my GenI stock M/C, or do you only reap the benefits when switching over to the R1 Forks with Radial Calipers???? Just curious, thanks.

I have been using a 06 R1 M/C for sometime with stock calipers on my gen 1. The feel is better and the brakes are more responsive to me. I believe that it is due to a larger piston or improved leverage or both in the R1 M/C. If you replace the levers after the mod, buy the R1 units. The clutch levers are the same for R1 and FZ1.

Don't use 07+ r1 MC because with 6pot the MC is 16mm, don't work well with 4pot.

Ahhh, are you sure about this? Because I have been looking at the new parts for these bikes on Boats.net ,
they have all the models (incl every year) for the R1 and FZ1.
So looking at the R1 master cylinder, the MC itself has slightly different part numbers (2 letters difference):
2004 YZF-R1 -YZF-R1S is: 5VY-W2587-00-00 MASTER CYLINDER SUB
2008 R1 - YZFR1XR is: 5SL-W2587-00-00 MASTER CYLINDER SUB

Now, I know these are different part no's, But! the Master Cylinder repair kit for both bikes have the same part number:
5VY-W0041-00-00 CYLINDER KIT, MASTER
Now if they were a different bore size they wouldn't have the same part number...

So I think that as long as it's post 2004 it's the same MC.
Now I am attempting to use logic here, so there is a chance that I could be wrong. But I hope not...

Oh and get this, the two parts listed here for the 04 and 08 MC assy's are $104 for the 04 and $189 for the 08! and it's essentially the same part...

What you say make sense.
I have not personally opened both to measure, so I may be wrong.
But my information came from the service manual :
