It annoys me

I'm sorry guys, but I take great offense to this post. Perhaps some of the sportbike riders you've met are off in the head, riding wheelies on interstates and intentionally smashing their tanks to do stunts. Those are the morons I think you're speaking of.

Don't be offended! It was not meant to offend and I think you miss the point--there are riders (like yourself) and then there are 'riders'.

The 'riders' are the ones who sit around at Starbucks talking about all the killer stuff they've done and then ride home. These guys go out and buy a brand new ___insert generic sportbike___, buy some matching gear (or none if they're a squid) and ride 500 miles a year; taking a belt sander to their knee pucks and tires so they can post up on power-rangers.com/starbucks/forum and get online jerkoffs from the other goofballs.

Owning a sportbike does not automatically put you into that category, just like owning a Harley does not automatically make you a Hell's Angel or a dentist (depending how you want to stereotype them). Bikes are a huge status item in North America and a great deal of people buy them because they want to project an image to other people. For some, it's all image, image, image and that's it. Some people don't care what they look like or what they ride, they just want to ride.

People who truly just want to ride will seek pleasure however they want, sometimes it's a sportbike, sometimes it's not--it doesn't even matter what it is or what you wear at that point; you're just out for a ride.

I just love to ride. Unfortunately I cant say I'm an ATGATT person though. I dont own leather pants. However I never ride without my leather coat, leather boots, my very thick jeans and a helmet. In the summer I dont use gloves until its dark out but I do have 3 different pairs of nice leather gloves depending on the temps.

If that makes me a squid, so be it lol.

I found it funny you were mentioning a kid with a hayabusa and shorts.. My friend did that all summer. Shorts and a t-shirt on his busa.

You're not a squid, you just have a couple tentacles showing.... :D

Not being ATGATT is not totally a squid. Squids are irresponsible and reckless with complete disregard for public safety and the law. I don't think you fit. ;)

Now, you may change your ways when you either A) Have your own skin peeled off or B) have to watch your friend in the ER getting open wounds scrubbed with a nylon bristle brush in soapy water to get the rocks out and he cannot have anything for the pain because his helmet is scratched and he might have a concussion. I'm not saying it to be an arse, I'm speaking the truth as a fact.

It does not have to be leathers... by thick jeans, you mean the armored riding jeans? You can wear armored mesh or textile pants... anything to save your skin is a blessing.

As for the sportbikers, yes, we have our "Show and Tell" street-queens here and then we have our serious riders. The difference is VERY easily spotted. I don't ride or hang with anyone from that crowd. Most of them just ride up and down the main drag all night with occasional stunts, lots of throttle blips and flashy smiles at the girls. Outside of dumping a stunt, it is unlikely they will get hurt because they are scared of cornering. :stirpot:

They are just normal jeans but they are like really thick material. I will be getting a full nice setup this winter though.

And yup, I dont do the crap you see on you tube. I do have my "fun" but its when im alone and no ones around and I know the roads. My friends have this thing about who has gone faster etc, then they bust my balls because I'm about 40MPH behind the kid with the Busa. I just dont care for it and they simply cannot comprehend that I drive a sport bike but dont feel the need to top it out lol.

Tell them to read (and try to understand) "The Pace"

Sounds like you ride this way.... you can have a lot of fun on public roads without being a hooligan. I like to read this every spring, to remind me as the riding season begins, to have fun AND be safe.

If they are trying to use peer pressure on you and force you to "keep up" which may be beyond your (or the bike's) capabilities, then they are the wrong crew to be with. Thankfully, you have kept your head and not given in Papa. But it is a dangerous road to travel. Be wary of people you ride with that are not telling you "Don't try and keep up. Ride your OWN pace!" I tell this to EVERYONE I ride with.

thats funny what you say about Harleys, it's kind 'of true in alot of cases. I remember an upscale subdivision that was being built near my old house- they were throwing in free Harley's to those that bought a new house there by a certain date. Perfect combo, a dentist and his HD that will maybe see 100 miles per year of riding.... I wonder if it came with the obligatory brain-bowl helmet and "helmet laws suck" decal??? But no, not all in the HD world is a joke, I would certainly ride the XR1200 (they have a good racing series in AMA for it).

On another forum, I once talked about a particular road that was good for getting a knee down on... got a little flack, but one guy in particular, he just would not let it go. I told him it was on a clean, desolate, country road that hardly get's used- actually on the backside of an old private airport. Very remote and away from traffic (what little traffic the "middle of nowhere" gets). But no, he makes me look like a fool. I'm in full leather but he says I'm crazy. On another thread this same guy post's pics of his buddy stunt riding... shorts, sneakers, backwards baseball hat and that's it!!! I told him "so I ride in full gear, and scrape a knee a few times- but doing a wheelie with no gear at all is OK?!?!?!?!?". No response. Not that I wanted a argument but it just amazes me sometimes. A squid has no sense, no understanding of what he is doing or when to do it. Knowing when to wick it up is the difference, and for how long.

*gixxerjasen treads lightly in this thread due to his name*

When I had my 2001 GSX-R600 I used to frequent the gixxer.com forums. It was a great place back then. I later got a TLR and moved over to the TL forums. After a few years with that I ditched the streets in favor of the track and got me a 2004 GSX-R600 that was track only. I popped back into gixxer.com and totally didn't recognize the place. Gone were the old sane knowledgeable folks and they were replaced by a bunch of flaming squids. Not as in flaming gay, but as in flaming everyone and everything. I never went back.

I think one thing that a lot of people fail to remember is that a bike is a bike. People with loyalty to any kind of bike or brand or country of origin are missing out on a lot of wonderful riding experiences :) Bikes can offer so many different experiences, it would be foolish not to try them all

I'm with you, the cb550 I have was a blast (before I let it sit) to ride. They all have their own character. Now the 883 sportster I rode, well it was pretty boring. But your right.... they all have something to offer.

I'll ride almost any two-wheeler. I prefer sport and touring but I wouldn't kick out another bike simply because it has a specific name or style.

It isn't the bikes I get frustrated at, it is the riders who are on them.

I will read "the Pace".

But as far as keeping up, nope. I ask where we are going and most of the time if there is highway involved, I meet them about 5-10 mins later. They drive like freaking animals splitting cars down the middle and weaving. I have no problem holding a steady 75-80 and of course every once in a while wicking it up when no ones around but to be doing that stuff, not me.

I have a few more reasons than just myself to keep my DL and wake up in the morning. I like to ride very responcible. I dont mind giving it a little bit of gas when Im all by myself. Call me an overdressed nerd.
The bottom line is NO street is a place to push the limits. Have fun but be safe and respect the riders your with.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read that the first time.

And yea, you'd have to be silly to have so much brand loyalty to stick with a brand, or choose a name after a brand. :th_smiley_rotfl2[1]

I want to try them all. My next will have to be Suzuki, Triumph, Aprilla or Ducati.

So far I've had 3 Suzukis, 2 Yamahas and 1 Honda. My next bike is either going to be a Kawasaki or a Suzuki and I'd like to pick up something sexy like an Aprilia RS125 or Husqvarna SM in the near future

Me too, but I can't afford it. Thank goodness for demo days.

Speaking of which. If you want an eye opener, hit your local demo day and try something completely new. I went to the Honda demo day and really wanted to try the ST1300 having had an ST1100 previously. They only had one and it was signed up for for quite a while that day so I picked my spot and decided to try some other bikes in the mean time.

I skipped the CBR's and went for one of the six Gold Wings they had out there. The handling and power were surprising. But the most surprising was how that big pig carries it's weight. I put my all into getting it off the kickstand and nearly threw out my back trying to keep from pitching it over on the other side. It felt so light because it carries it's weight so low. It was right then I knew I was in for something different.

I rode in and my riding buddy was waiting ready to make fun of me. I shut off the bike and told him "I'm about to say two things I never thought I'd ever say in my life. First, I could totally own one of these. Second, I'd certainly have to replace these crappy speakers on this motorcycle because they suck." I talked him into taking one for a spin and he came rolling in blasting some old school rock and roll and agreed with my review. The other eye opener was the Rocket III at the Triumph demo day. I had to stop and have my shoulders put back in their sockets after that ride.

Just like most other forums, you have to wade through miles of sh*t to find a few gems. That is something these forums created by Dennis has SWORN to never resort to. That is why they are International and moderators in most time zones. We scoop out the crap and leave the gems. :D

You honestly have to ignore them and simply search for the answers within. I do that on the other FZ1 site. There is still a fair amount more technical knowledge there than here but it's not worth posing a question about it if you cannot find it. The ridicule, meaningless posts and useless drivel can very very painful to wade through. Eventually, you find the gem and quietly leave with it.

You're venting is actually great to hear because I know the team here is doing their jobs well!

I would compare this site to other sites (including the other FZ forum) to the difference between; going to a nice lounge with a group of friends and discussing things of mutual interest in a comfortable setting. vs Going to a rave by yourself and trying to start a conversation with a total stranger. You wouldn't get much over the noise.....:confused0024:
