my 2002 yamaha fz1 has 61000 miles on it and hasnt been driven more than 10 miles in the past year. My dad, uncle, and cousin, all thought they heard a weird noise on it when they quickly took it for a spin yesterday though. i called the dealership to have them look at it but they are stacked until may, but when i told the guy how many miles it had on it he said he could already think of a bunch of stuff probably needing replaced. my dad said he would take it apart with me and help me replace/work on stuff, so what do you guys think i should look at to make sure if its alright, and what all would you replace after 60000 miles???

Can you describe the noise and why you think it is weird?

Any trouble getting it to start, how does it sound at idle?

I would think about possibly changing the spark plugs and definitely change the oil.

I will let some more experienced FZ mechanics chime in as well.

2002... you'll want to inspect the carb boots for cracks and replace them is you find any. Do you know what, if any, mods have been done to the bike? Still the stock exhaust? EXUP? Have the carbs been drilled/jetted?

We'll do our best to help.

my cousin said its a top end noise? and the exhaust is stock, but im replacing it i think because my dad got a suzuki bandit the other day from a harley dealership(they wanted nothing to do with it so sold it cheap lol) and it had a yoshi exhaust so i think ill swap them ;) also i think the dealership dude told me to replace the cam chain?

and not sure about any mods but i honestly dont see any and im doubting it haha. and idk anything about the carbs being drilled

I agree with change oil and check plugs also air cleaner and coolant level/change,tyre pressure etc,I would not be changing the pipe until at least all of this was done and the problem fixed.I have all way`s been a big believer in only doing one job at a time also the noise of the new pipe may make it harder to hear the problem,I certainly would not be pulling the motor down until I had a good idea of what the problem is,you may need someone else`s help in this, other wise I would wait until May

I would of thought the cam chain should still be ok at 60,000 miles, could be a problem with the chain ajuster, but I have no experiene with the gen 1 motor, so another member may be able to give you better advice on this matter

Top end noise from a bike with that many miles sounds like valves to me. I'd check the valve clearances. They were due at 26,000 miles. Plugs, oil and other routine maintenance should be done as well. Maybe it is just a worn chain and sprockets. A complete inspection is in order by someone who has knowledge of these bikes would be a start. If you don't have experience with engine rebuilding, you may end up with a pile of parts.

I'd have to agree with BigDave. I would look into the valves if it sounds like it's the top end. They are probably ready to be adjusted. As far as the cam chain,it has an "automatic" tension adjuster. This could also be checked once you get the valve covers off to do the valve work. I'll look through my Clymer's manual and see if I can come up with any more ideas on things to check.
