Gauges off later bike (eg: r1)

If there's one thing I don't like about my '01 it's the gauges which look very dated.

Has anyone had success (or issues!) installing gauges from a later model bike (eg. R1)?
 
So with that first link, he talks about the RN04 being a better cockpit than the RN01. So does that mean if you use the RN04 cockpit you use the 2004 gauges? Has any one done this yet?
