Hi Everyone!

Pleasure to be here. I'm currently running Pirelli Rosso tyre with a 55 profile on the rear.... which I know is a bit taller than the standard 50 profile tyre.

What I'm wondering, is if I go for 17/49 gearing, with 124 links in the chain...

The FZ1 gearing thread says this reduces wheelbase by 5mm over stock. Will I have the room to do this if I am running a 55 profile rear tyre?

Many thanks, your wisdom is appreciated

I always run a 55 rear. From memory, the axle can be maximum forward in the swingarm and still doesn't contact.

I'm running 17/47 and there's loads of room. I always recommend buying up a size in chain and trimming as required once you've worked out the perfect setup.

Best thing for your own sanity is to lift the rear, loosen the axle, remove the axle block on the nut side, push the axle through just enough the other block is off the adjustment nut, and slide the whole assembly forward. It's a 5 minute job that'll prove your tyre can go all the way forward without contact.

I can now confirm, that a 55 profile does fit, with 17/49 sprockets and 124 link chain.
It's close, but chain will only be stretching from here on out, so any later adjustments will only be giving it more room.

Bike rides great with 17/49 too, provided you aren't spending all your time doing motorway miles

I also did:
2008 R1 forks swap
2008 R1 6pot calipers
2008 R1 master cylinder
2015 R1 rear shock
(thanks to this forum for all the info!)

Was a blast round castle combe 🙌
