If you are on a gen1 the book is straight up wrong about the spacer at the bottom of the fork.
It says install the seal, install the tube, then drop the oil cup in. Oil cup won't fit inside the fork tube, goes allllll the way at the bottom of the fork lower. That gets installed before everything else.
I would take apart the forks before ordering parts, as your fork tubes may be rusted and heavily pitted down below the fork seal. Mine were shot, even after sanding them down and trying the JB weld trick of filling the pits it was mis-spent time.
I ordered new fork tubes from Bike Bandit, they had the best price/lowest shipping to the east coast at the time.
I used Traxxion Dynamics to buy new seals, oil, and installation tool.
My bike had 27k miles on it and the upper and lower guides were worn out through the teflon down to the copper.
I bought new spring retainers, and new dust covers from bike bandit.
I ditched the stock fork protectors as my fork tubes were beat, and decided to try some boot gaters.
