I did nearly the same thing for a few days while I was waiting for my eliminator kit. I basically just pulled the plate off and Dremeled off everything under it where the black painted steel mounting bar for the plate goes. Not as clean as a fender eliminator, but a good $0 mod.

I didn't shorten mine like that though - it looks good. I thought about it but figured if I was going eliminator anyway I'd save the trouble of pulling it apart and just wait a couple days so I didn't have to do it twice. Even with just the bottom chopped it still looks better than stock. I don't know why they put such HUGE rear fenders on sport bikes.
