Chain slack on my FZ09 - opinion

Hey everyone. I need your opinion here on my chain adjustment since most of you have been around bike for quite some time.

Chain specs on the 09 is 5-15mm. Yep! Coming from the 6R with 1 3/4" to 2" it is quite a shock...lol

When I got the bike I was like WTF! Then after a call at the dealership that forgot to give me my book... it was fine at 15mm. 1400 miles later Im like... let's look at it, 30mm already!

Told myself a big Oups and adjust it back to 10mm pushing up and down like I would do normally. Now the chain is very noisy on freeway... like I can hear it as much as the exhaust almost.

So I'm starting its either a mistake in the book or the chain or I don't know?

At 30mm it was fine... no noise. So for now I will back it up to 20mm or so and see how it goes.

I really want your opinion on this since some of you own multiple bikes over the years.

I will try that. I'm at 5/7 on preload and weigh 175lbs. It doesn't travel much but will double check for sure. FZ8 use 525 also... I guess it should be fine.

Thanks for the advise. I will start at 20mm and go from there. Not like those imagineers know everything...lol We buy those bike then still need to sort them out for them. :)

What does the dealer say? Seeing how you bought a brand new bike, shouldn't they address these issues for you? That is why you pay a premium on these bloody things from the dealer, innit? :)

I know it's quite normal for a new chain to stretch a little bit initially but I've always found the first adjustment on a new chain lasts thousands of miles before needing another. That noise is no good, though...

Has this popped up on the FZ/MT-09 forums as a common issue?

I'm curious to know more of your findings!

Not sure I want to rely 100% of what the dealer might says... most of them go by the book and thats it. But I will call them tomorrow and address the issue. The bike is quite new and Im sure some issue will pop here and there. For now I will use 20-25mm until Yamaha look into it. I rather change sprockets and chain then rebuilt a gbox! I rather be ahead of the pronlem then fixing it and waiting 3 months to get some parts and claims...

Just check if your rear wheel adjusters are set both in the same position [if you are real keen you can string line your wheels], even if it needs 30mm slack to stop chain noise that`s where I would run it then I would not give it a second thought.

I will put it to 20-25 and if it end up settling to 30 again, well that would be the happy number! LOL I will keep a close eye on it for a while for sure.

I guess if the centre of the front & rear sprocket and swingarm are in a straight line [longest point]in the position where the measurement is taken, it could work?
