Ok so another topic stemming from the trailblazers I am working on.
Both needed top end rebuilds, new chains, carbs cleaned. They also need bored .020 oversized.
I just sat down to write up a repair estimate for everything and my cost on parts (I dont get really any discount) comes to over $600 for both.
Total estimate comes to over $1000.
When you guys do a rebuild do you charge list cost for parts? Or do you charge your cost and add labor? Realistically $500 for someone to rebuild an engine isn't that bad but telling him its gonna be over a grand makes me feel like I'm not doing it any cheaper than any other shop.
Which BTW is the whole goal as of right now I'm doing this for spare cash out of my garage.

Charge somewhere between list and cost. With the internet, anyone can get discounted parts. You could also have them buy there own parts but I'd rather get the right parts the first time. In the end, it has to be worth your time. If not, you could be doing something else or working on another customer's unit. You're allowed to make money.

Why not get a good used motor. We do lots of older vehicles in our shop and it just makes sense to buy a good used motor with low miles. We swap the motors out in a day. Customer gets his car back quicker and we get it out the door quicker with good pay. We buy all our used motors from a recycle yard that test every motor before it leaves and gives us a 1 year 20,000 kilometer warranty and if anything should go wrong they pay our labor to remove and replace. We always mark up parts and labor.

uh you dont charge shop prices for work done out of a garage. charge your cost for parts and just take the labor charges home as profit

I don't understand this logic. He's not a bank. If he gets the parts, it takes time and money to get them. Especially if he drives to get them. In any event, I can't imagine anyone who the OP is doing work for isn't getting a great deal.

Ill vouch for Sebastian, he made me some excellent frame sliders for a great price.... I hope stuffs going well for u dude, I haven't been around the forums much coz of school but all the best with this project
