After market meters (Speedo + Tach) on 2004 FZ1S

I'm in the process of restoring a 2004 FZ1S and it currently has no speedometer. The OEM meter assembly looks to cost around $600. I bought a cheap speedometer and it never worked. Have you guys had any luck on installing any after market meters on your 2004's?

You can find used ones on ebay for cheaper than that. Also 1st gen R1 instrument clusters work as well. There is a thread here somewhere for the mod.
